Babaloo's Waterloos: Dancing With "The John Birch Society"

From Babalu blog (July 25, 2007):

A Unique Situation

Via Alberto de la Cruz, here's a pretty good read on Cuba from the John Birch Society.

Has it really at long last come to this? The John Birch Society? Babalú is posting articles from the John Birchers? Has four years of courting respectability in the media culminated in an alliance with The John Birch Society? Are they really mad? The Babalunians, that is. Do they know nothing at all about The John Birch Society? Do they know nothing at all about American political culture? What planet do they inhabit? Are Cuban-Americans so destitute of friends that Val & Company must get in bed with The John Birch Society? They won't associate themselves with Posada or other Cuban freedom fighters, but they do embrace the John Birchers? Oh yes, it is "A Unique Situation."

Let me first say, i'm not a john bircher, just trying to get educated in the group. I remember them back to the days of Young Americans for Freedom and Barry Goldwater.

That out of the way, i'm looking at their web site and reading what they stand for and see that they are fiercely against communism and any form of socialism ( like the welfare estate ), they are strict constitutionalists, they don't believe in empire building, or nation building, they are against illegal immigration but see cubans fleeing the island as refugees a special case. It looks like they are liberterians to me.

I'm just wondering what's your beef with these folks? What I'm missing?

Why it's elementary, CorgiGuy: if Babalu praises it I destroy it; if they hate it, I love it. If they say to-may-to I say to-mah-to. No great intellect is needed here at RCAB, just a lot of hot air and a my never-ending supply of merde de vache.

Mr cheche

Are you saying that i must stop thinking when i come to this blog?

I was never to good in the choir!

Tell me what's wrong with the bircher folks?

Absolutely nothing. The positions outlined in that article are uniformly excellent. They are, as you say, very libertarian. They seem to have an excellent grasp of the issues vis-a-vis immigration and the Cuban question. However, since Babalu posted it, I have to be against it whether or not it makes sense. Capisce?

Yes, they are anti-Communists, so very anti-Communist, in fact, that they have labelled every American president since Roosevelt a Communist. They came to prominence by out-McCarthying McCarthy and charging that Eisenhower was a conscious agent of Communism. Their endorsement is the kiss of death and even Reagan kept his distance.

The media have always portrayed them on a par with the American Nazi Party and the Ku Klux Klan, which is a great injustice, because they have never practiced terrorism.

Still, they are the Ultima Thule of politics on the right in this country, far more radical, esoteric and quirky than even the Libertarians, and so out of the mainstream that they do not even register on the radar.

cheche george:

I see that you are also defending The John Birch Society on Babalú. In fact, you should consider joining; it would be a good match.

bookster said...

Forgive I'm bit confused, cheche and tellechea are you all the same person? Or are you playing of each other?

You say that the media gives them a bad wrap, well is this the same media that gives cubanamericans a bad wrap?

If I recall they got a bad wrap in the 60's for being anticommunists, same bad wrap that barry goldwater unfairly got. You know is easy to demonize somebody for having different or unpopoular views.

You have to tell me what is it in their positions or core values that you don't agree with?

Manuel A.Tellechea said...

corgiguy:

Not conclusive enough for you that the founder of the John Birch Society, Robert Welch, accused President Eisenhower of "knowingly receiving and abiding by Communist orders, and consciously serving the Communist conspiracy, for all his adult life."

Manuel A.Tellechea said...

corgiguy:

John Birchers also believe that the U.S. government is being held hostage by the "Insiders" who are the organic successors of the Illuminati Freemason Conspiracy.

The author of the bestselling hoax about the Holy Grail should have credited the Birchers with his inspiration.

The jbs was founded at a time when there was strong sentiment and fear of communism in this country and they lead the charge to a fever pitch. It was paronia. Those were different times then. Hell i remember whe ronald reagan got accused of being a communist for being the president of screen actor's guild.

I'm not defending this folks but i don't see anything on their site www.jbs.org that's different from what i believe.

My question to you is what is it in their views now that you find so offensive?

bookster said...

The Illuminati is that like the skull and bones that bush and kerry belong to? Conspiracy theory stuff?

You got do better than that, give some proof or reference to back your assertions.

Why don't you just google "The John Birch Society?" You will find mountains of information on their arcane beliefs that have nothing at all to do with anti-communism (it opposed fluoridated water because it believed it was part of a communist plot to poison the brains of Americans).

The Birchers were right about the major threat that faced the 20th century but were too conspiratorial and frankly insane to contribute in any meaningful way to the collapse of communism. In fact, they gave mainstream anti-communists a bad name.

WhoHooo i can Google! I can google practically on any subject and get twisted opinions on it. If you don't believe me google cuba or cubanamericans.

Manuel A.Tellechea said...

corgiguy:

Just as I hope you read with discernment, you must also google with discernment. I hope that is not above your capabilities.

Your hero, Barry Goldwater, incidentally, considered the Birchers quacks and kept them at arm's length, allowing no known-member to serve in any capacity on his 1964 campaign.

Corgi, despite what the Evil Manuel will have you believe, I am the real Manuel. Ignore that man behind the curtain. Look at my picture in my profile and you'll recognize me instantly...

Manuel A.Tellechea said...

cheche george:

What! The Birchers didn't want you? You were too red for them?

bookster said...

google with discernment, UHMM?

since you are not going to answer my simple minded question, i better stop otherwise i'll end up in fantoma's madhouse.

Who's cheche? Is that you Manuel your alter ego? Is it george from babalu?

Anonymous said...

Corgi, he thinks its this other person, but it may be someone from New Jersey who knows him very well...

Manuel A.Tellechea said...

corgiguy:

Life must be a perpetual trial to one who does not know the meaning of discernment. Why would I add to the "Sorrows of Gorgiguy" by confining you in The Madhouse?

As for cheche george, the fetishist from Jacksonville, FL, he likes to pretend that he is me because I am so much more interesting than him.

He's been in The Madhouse before with his beloved fantomas and may well return there alone.

Our friend Charlie Bravo has sent us the lyrics of a Bob Dylan song dedicated to the John Birchers. Although Dylan may be somewhat too strident in his criticism, the feeling of paranoia that pervades The Society is well-reflected in the song:

John Birch Paranoid Blues
by Bob Dylan

Well, I was feelin' sad and feelin' blue,
I didn't know what in the world I was gonna do,
Them Communists they wus comin' around,
They wus in the air,
They wus on the ground.
They wouldn't gimme no peace. . .

So I run down most hurriedly
And joined up with the John Birch Society,
I got me a secret membership card
And started off a-walkin' down the road.
Yee-hoo, I'm a real John Bircher now!
Look out you Commies!

Now we all agree with Hitlers' views,
Although he killed six million Jews.
It don't matter too much that he was a Fascist,
At least you can't say he was a Communist!
That's to say like if you got a cold you take a shot of malaria.

Well, I wus lookin' everywhere for them gol-darned Reds.
I got up in the mornin' 'n' looked under my bed,
Looked in the sink, behind the door,
Looked in the glove compartment of my car.
Couldn't find 'em . . .

I wus lookin' high an' low for them Reds everywhere,
I wus lookin' in the sink an' underneath the chair.
I looked way up my chimney hole,
I even looked deep inside my toilet bowl.
They got away . . .

Well, I wus sittin' home alone an' started to sweat,
Figured they wus in my T.V. set.
Peeked behind the picture frame,
Got a shock from my feet, hittin' right up in the brain.
Them Reds caused it!
I know they did . . . them hard-core ones.

Well, I quit my job so I could work alone,
Then I changed my name to Sherlock Holmes.
Followed some clues from my detective bag
And discovered they wus red stripes on the American flag!
That ol' Betty Ross . . .

Well, I investigated all the books in the library,
Ninety percent of 'em gotta be burned away.
I investigated all the people that I knowed,
Ninety-eight percent of them gotta go.
The other two percent are fellow Birchers . . . just like me.

Now Eisenhower, he's a Russian spy,
Lincoln, Jefferson and that Roosevelt guy.
To my knowledge there's just one man
That's really a true American: George Lincoln Rockwell.
I know for a fact he hates Commies cus he picketed the movie Exodus.

Well, I fin'ly started thinkin' straight
When I run outa things to investigate.
Couldn't imagine doin' anything else,
So now I'm sittin' home investigatin' myself!
Hope I don't find out anything . . . hmm, great God!

The Sorrows of Corgiguy and your thoughtfullness in not sending me makes me hopefull.

The song by Bob Dylan, hey i remember it well, looks like dylan could have benefit it from googling at the time. The 60's were turbulent times and somehow i made it through them!. Did you know that hilary was goldwater girl?

Look i'm not defending the birchers, i thought their article in the cuban refugees was postive, i'm just asking questions, trying to understand the basis of your criticism, after all being able to understand the obscure is what discernment is all about isn't?
