Barack Obama: The End of Hope for Cuba

I have received many e-mails from readers, both known and unknown to me, asking me to re-consider my decision to close this blog on January 20th. At the same time, my own determination to do so was strengthened daily by the events leading up to Inauguration Day. Bush may not have listened to Cubans, but Obama listens to the wrong Cubans. As soon as it is possible for him to do so, and sooner even than most of us expect, the juggernaut of normalization will roll over every Cuban on the island, leaving them parallel with their surroundings. There is nothing that can be done to stop him and much that we must do to prepare ourselves, as best as we can, for the greatest defeat we have ever sustained in our struggle against tyranny in our country.

In 1959, the United States installed Castro in power and it has been the guarantor of Communism in Cuba since 1962. What it has not done, however, is to underwrite the enterprise. That was a task left to America's enemies. This is going to change now. Cuba will remain the only Communist state under U.S. military protection but now it will also enjoy all the benefits of commerce with this nation, or leastwise its oppressors will. After defaulting on every foreign creditor and exhausting every line of credit while amassing the largest per capita indebtedness in the world, the Castro regime expects and has probably already received assurances that Obama will rescue it, ignoring the floating corpses of all previous "saviors" who have ever extended a lifeline to it.

Since there can be no resumption of diplomatic relations with Communist Cuba until it settles U.S. claims against it, Obama will float the regime a loan so that it can pay pennies on the dollar for the properties it confiscated and nationalized before Obama was born, receiving in return clear title to them, which will enable it to sell those same properties at market value to a new generation of greedy and ignorant American investors, who will pour billions into the island with the assurance that the U.S. government will bail them out when the regime decides again that seizing American assets is more beneficial than trading with the enemy.

The biggest losers in this arrangement will be the Cuban people, who will not regain their liberty, but become subject to the exploitation of even more foreigners. Their masters will multiply but the quality of their lives will not improve. A prosperous tyranny is always to be more feared than one on the verge of economic collapse. The means of repression will expand and be fortified with the profits that the regime will reap from trade with the U.S. There will be no sharing of the wealth, however, because economic rights always anticipate political rights, and a regime that has always regarded both as anathema will not open the door to one knowing that it leads to the other.

The result of "normalization" (what a quaint word as if any relationship with a regime like Castro's could ever be anything but abnormal!) will prove detrimental to all parties except Castro and his henchmen. Those who espouse rapprochement do so because they hope to profit from the suffering of the Cuban people. Obama, besides acting on his ideological affinities with Castro, hopes to score a cheap coup de theatre by renewing relations with Communist Cuba, which the media are sure to represent as the greatest diplomatic feat in history, surpassing the opening of Japan by Perry or of China by either Marco Polo or Nixon. American businessmen, industrialists and agronomists, who have spent 8 years drooling about the prospects of trade with Cuba as Bush dangled that putrid carrot before them, will trample one another like elephants even before they reach the cliff.

To do business with Cuba will become more important than to do justice to Cubans. Human rights there will become as irrelevant as human rights in China without the Cuban people ever being compensated with an extra bowl of porridge for surrendering to the stomach what rightly belongs to the spirit.

This is what the election of Barack Obama means to Cubans and why tomorrow will always be a day of mourning for our country.

For my part, I prefer to mourn in private, which is the reason that I have decided to close the Review of Cuban-Americans Blogs tomorrow.

Tiendo a pensar que las cosas pudieran favorecernos in the long run with openess of any kind rather that maintaning the cold war mentality . The infamous status quo

So you shutter a blog that is supposed to, by it's name, "review Cuban-American blogs," because a President has been elected who has a Cuba strategy different from the one you think it should be.

Wow. Either you are being intentionally obtuse or you genuinely have lost your marbles.

Well, um, hey....good luck Manuel. I'm sure you'll be around in some form or another, because you sure can't stay away.

Rick:

As I recall, you didn't believe that I would close RCAB either.

With Barack Obama having pledged to give Castro everything he wants "without preconditions," Cuban-American blogs, or, at least, those devoted to fighting the Castro dictatorship, have become irrelevant, and a review of Cuban-American blogs even more irrelevant.

You are not Cuban and I don't expect you to see that when most Cuban bloggers don't.

You can be sure, however, that the Babalunians will never change and that there will always be much hypocrisy there for you to plumb.

Good luck.

Oh Manuel, just STFU. This is by far your worst post. Which is for some odd reason, surprises me.

Fidel, over the course of the last 50 years has destroyed Cuba, not Obama. But if you feel it necessary to foist the last 50 years upon Obama, go ahead. The nation stills needs a group to laugh at.

Tellechea may be correct, or incorrect, in the end we shall find out anyway.

Rick, for someone as suppossedly commited to democracy as you claim to be, you seem to always give yourself and anyone with whom you agree the benefit of the doubt, all in the spirit of tolerance and democratic respect, except of course never for people who disagree with you, Rick it is you who IS obtuse, in fact, you are a pompous prick, but we already knew that, including you Rick.

Tellechea, for an writer with a blog named RCAB, you have failed on that respect, admit it, shut down with no open ended thread left as a loophole and be done with your pomposity and arrogance, you and Rick deserve each other, both of you should consider coauthoring a blog, it would be the ultimate expression and delivery of pomposity bar none.

P.S. Before you morons even think of going there, I am not a Babalunian, so I say to you what I'd say to the comemierdas at Babalublog, shove it and shut the fuck up.

Castro is dead. Cuba is waiting until Bush leaves, as not to give him credit. Just like the Iranians waited until Jimmy Carter left, so they could release to hostages.

Castro is dead, the timing of the release of the news will blossom in a few days.

Oh, how we shall miss the rants of a 48 year old Cuban-American who left Cuba as an infant and has no first hand knowledge of what he speaks. And yet, in a post you said you refuse to vote, for this is not your country. The country which has fed and sheltered you for your 48 years is not good enough for you. You did not vote when your voice mattered most. Now you are taking your toys and going home.

Few will be the people who miss your presumptive rants and screeds. Even fewer will be those who miss the psychotropic-induced ramblings of Fantomas, who as of tomorrow, will be without an audience.

Ultimately, RCAB was an unsuccessful two-year exercise in sophomoric vengeance and sophistry. I will not miss the effluvium coming out of this blog.

look it up, it is a true fact

White House Says Cheney to Be in Wheelchair Tuesday
Vice President Cheney will be in a wheelchair for tomorrow's inauguration ceremony, the White House said tonight, after he pulled a muscle in his back.

Cheney was moving into his new house in McLean from the Naval Observatory when he hurt his back moving boxes, White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said.

The vice president's doctor found no significant damage from the injury, Perino said. Nevertheless, he advised Cheney to spend the next couple of days in a wheelchair.

"The vice president is looking forward to being there for tomorrow's historic inaugural activities," Perino said.

Manuel,

Change will inevitably come to the island. That said, it won’t arrive in the way we had either hoped or predicted. Those who bear the responsibility of having installed the island’s present dictatorship will die free men and while this is without-a-doubt – unfortunate and unjust – it will indeed untie the hands of those younger g-men who desire to show their true faces. Once the two brothers have departed this life for judgment in another, there will be those in the Havana hierarchy who will be unshackled from the Castro machine. This is inevitable.

Now the question becomes – will Cuba ever return to the state of prosperity and general well-being it enjoyed prior to Fidel & Co.? Set aside the problems of the Batista administration – and we must admit that there were indeed problems with it. Cuban infrastructure was – as we all know – on par with other developed nations like the United States. The literacy rate was one of the highest in Latin America and the Cuban peso – again as we all know – was at several times – valued above the U.S. dollar. Business was thriving – to put it bluntly. Will she ever return to that level of development? Unfortunately, I’m not so sure. But when I find myself feeling down about that prospect, I look to Japan – a nation that was able to completely turn itself around after a devastating war, occupation (granted the occupiers assisted greatly in its redevelopment) and two atomic bombs. If Japan was able to do it – why not Cuba? I am, I suppose, “on the fence.”

One bright spot to the transition to an Obama administration is the return of pre-Bush regulations regarding family visits and remittances. We – those Cubans who have been lucky enough to have escaped that fiery hell and re-emerge in the light of some semblance of freedom – have the best chance of ushering in our own democracy via re-connecting with our brothers and sisters still on the island. But we must take care – swallowing any pride and arriving humbly. The older generations must shelve there feelings of “I told you so” and live in the now while respecting the past.

I believe we can do it. We must – for if not – we must be prepared to divorce ourselves from all-things-Cuban – forget about her forever and live as if she had never existed. I for one, am not willing to do that.

The worst Cuban haters, are the Cuban exiles, who wish to "pressure cook" Cuba, even more then the United States. Their words have a more harmful effect, then my words ever good.

Having said that, as my last post in the C-A blosisphere. I do wish you C-A good luck. Cuba's freedom will always be important to me. As someone who saw the face of communism in Bosnia.

Manuel, is one of the few Cuban exiles that actually gets it. Unfortunately, he like so many others, ignorantly sold his soul to xenophobics republicans, in the hopes that they would give him back his nation. Even with the knowledge, that the xenophobics fear the Spanish-speaker.

Nevertheless, as i said this is my last post. As the C-A has ceased to exist as a community to listen to. It is unfortunate, as they once had the attention of the world, during the Elian situation, and immediately after they made President Bush.

Unfortunately for the Cuban, they failed to teach the world, about Fidel. Instead, they felt their only duty was to shake their finger at their percieved enemies, and support Bush's effort to free the Iraqis.

Good luck to you Cuban immigrants. You can never say that you didnt have an opportunity to free your nation. You had nearly 8 years to be proactive. Instead your leading voices chose to drink beer, cheer the Miami Heat, photoshop silly pictures of your hated Hollywood stars, and show pictures of the latest Cuban cuisines.

Shame on you, shame on all of you!!

Sincerely,

John Bishop

The future will bring change. Of that there can be no doubt. But not all change will take us closer to our goal of a free Cuba: free and prosperous, hopefully, but free in any case.

Post-war Japan recovered because the United States imposed on it a democratic Constitution and government.

Although I would not want the U.S. to impose anything on Cuba (its past efforts at "nation-building" having effectively destroyed our country), I do believe it has a moral and historical obligation to do everything in its power to remove the evil that it imposed on our people 50 years ago, or, at the very least, to do nothing to obstruct its removal.

Obama, rather than confront and undermine the dictatorship, will contribute to its perpetuation. "No preconditions" means carte blanche for the Castro regime to continue oppressing the Cuban people and a commitment on the part of the U.S. to do nothing to remove or even to reprove it.

This new "Obama Doctrine," or "Bad Neighbor Policy," defines "self-determination" as the right of (left-wing) tyrants to determine the future of their countries without consulting the will of the people or being subject to international sanctions for violating their human rights.

Bush's idiotic restrictions on remittances and family visits will allow Obama to do one humane thing for the Cuban people by rescinding them before he proceeds to commit a thousand wrongs against them.

*But yet, Bush did not confront and undermine the dictatorship.*

*Bush did not recognize the Castro regime or lift the trade embargo. Barack Hussein Obama will do both.*

Those are two very different standards.

Hey Manuel, it is over for the Cuban immigrant community. You will never be allowed to apply your double-standards, sliding-scale, and hyprocricy EVER again in my nation!!

In many ways it is good that you close this blog. Though I've found an interesting community in Cuban blogdom, the real work for Cuba here in the US lies outside of blogging. What must happen is the preservation and transmitting of what a free Cuba should be and can be. Damn yourself if in leaving this blog you stop writing and speaking out for a free Cuba in general. I hope to come across your name again in the coming years as I did when I picked up your translation of versos sencillos almost half a decade ago--years before the birth of this blog.

E.P.D. MAT (or R.I.P) You embodied the imperious nature of the Balarts, the Coulter, the Hannity, the Roura etc. I'm sure you'll make great fossil fuel one day. If you were equine you'd be a pony and only have between 0 and 2 two tricks. If you were a magician (I'm sure you wish) you'd have to be the greatest with only one up your sleeve. That being said it's people like you that stir the pot (try smoking it one day) and we need you, because even a a broken watch is right 2 times a day. Good Luck Manuel A. Tellechea I mean it

No, Manuel is right, Obama will be apocalyptic for the Cuban exile community. However, the rest of the world will prosper. If you are not a right-wing Cuban immigrant, then you need not worry.

If you are a right-wing Cuban immigrant, then i will find a big rock and hide under it.

Thanks for the great ride Manuel! I'm sorry to see your closing and doubt I could say anything to the contrary to make you stay open. Oh yeah, you already covered this in an earlier post but I felt like I needed to say it again because I promised a friend: the plug will be pulled on Fidel today or sometime after and his body will be presented to the Obama administration as a good will gesture. Good riddance to Barry (and the Communist system in Cuba)!

I hope not, every movement, needs some type of rabid opposition to sustain itself. I can think of no better opposition then the xenophobic racist republicans, and their Cuban immigrant self-hating supporters.

To be fair, I never really watched the past inaugurations, either, except for President Reagan's. But after a local special on all things Obama last night here in Philly- the Obama Super Store in DC, the bobbleheads, the flags, the shirts, the mugs, the plates, the candles, the soaps, the plush dolls, the sneakers, the interviews... I just simply had my fill.

God Bless America and the new President.

Pobrecito Armando Hart, debe estar sufriendo mucho
-----------------

EFE
