In a poll conducted by the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, 82 percent of Spaniards were in favor of severing diplomatic relations with Venezuela over Chávez's continued insults and threats to their country.
This is the real Spain, not the caricature advanced by her enemies, whether the Castro clique or the BUCLers of unpleasant memory. The people of Spain feel no love or loyalty to Spanish conglomerates or political parties and appear to have no difficulty repudiating them. Spaniards do care about their Cuban cousins and all Spanish families are related in some degree or other to the children of the emigrantes, whose descendents constitute the majority population of the island.

The Spaniards' opposition to this tyrant — whether as a nationalist reaction or any other kind of reaction — will rebound to the benefit of both the Venezuelan and Cuban people. It certainly rebounds to the credit of Spaniards.

Manuel, not to say that out of the thousands who visit Cuba and are Castro shills in search of the myth, there are many that are not, they are the ones for example who smuggle things back and forth for us, and for example, the person who alerted us of the adventures of Dr Garcia Sabrido is one of them. There are also many of them who work in conglomerates in Cuba who are great helpers to the cause of the freedom of Cuba, because they have a sense of justice and they see what's done to the Cuban people on a daily basis, and believe me, they are harsh in judging their own and they will be formidable witness once the culprits and their accomplices have to face justice.
There are many cases I know who pay a decent salary to their Cuban workers under the table. Then you have the ones who show up at the house of their Cuban friends with medication for sick relatives and food to be put on the table. We have a good net of Spaniards who help the cause of a free Cuba with what can only be defined as ardor. The same can be said for many Italians, which whom we have excellent contacts.
I will not mention his name, but there was a Spanish diplomat in Cuba who contacted me many times and who single handedly had a personal "underground railroad" to take people out of Cuba asking for nothing in return. One day he will be recognized for all he did, and knowing the man, I can guarantee that he will not accept any honors for what he sees as a duty. He's not in Cuba anymore, and he was very much harassed by the authorities during his whole tenure.
Then we have Queen Sofia.
She didn't go to any state owned restaurant in Cuba. She went to a paladar, and shared time and bread with humble Cubans in a solar, thus giving a royal slap in the face to the Cuban protocol officers.
We cannot say the same about Jimmah Peanuts Carter, for example.
The King was something else in Cuba, too.
He didn't seat in the King's Throne that has been reserved forever in the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales for some Spanish royal bottom. I know a person who was present and according to him, the King told Eusebio Leal Spengler: "ese trono pertenecera a un cubano.... un dia".
Therefore, one can safely assume that the King by using the future, was not even suggesting that any Cuban honcho who was present remotely deserved to be part of the future of Cuba.
In the same visit, Aznar gave his jacket to a man on the streets of Old Havana, under the puzzled gaze of Alarcon.
So, yeah, there are thousands who are tools of the regime, and there are at least hundreds who are not, of the total number of Spaniards who travel to Cuba we have a great group who are helping the cause of a free Cuba, in silence.

I was referring, of course, to Spaniards who go to Cuba as sex tourists or to sun themselves while Cubans live perennially in the shade.
Of course, the Catholic Kings and Aznar would have made a far more eloquent statement if they had declined Castro's entreaties to visit the island as his guests.
I certainly agree with you, Manuel, but our sources think that the visit to Cuba was also reassuring to Cuban people.... It's all a matter of perception.
Personally, I think that more reassuring would have been to tell the dictator a terse "we do not visit you" but politics are what they are, which is very frustrating for people like us.
I know what kind of people you were referring to, and I wanted to stress that difference, driving it even deeper in establishing that not all the Spaniards are the same and that actually, those who support castro are in a minority.
I met a leftist in Spain once who told me something interesting he said: Soy de izquierdas hombre, pero Castro, ese es un comunista de mierda!
To him, being a leftist was just to be somebody who was not a right winger!
For us, of course it's different. But that tells us about how lonely Castro really is, in terms of numbers.
Of course there will always be opportunistic people who'll kick the mule when it's down, and those come in every race, color or creed, mot just the Spaniards, I do believe that the majority of Spaniards look towards Cuba as the sister or brother Island we are, for we Cubans have never forgotten that Spain is the Madre Patria, and one day when Cuba is free they will celebrate with us in the streets.
Hate some nationalities if you will, but I shall never hate Spain, what's happening in Cuba lays squarely on the shoulders of one man fidel, it has nothing to do with Spain, and thank God some are around to help the downtrodden.
