Barack Obama: The End of Hope for Cuba

I have received many e-mails from readers, both known and unknown to me, asking me to re-consider my decision to close this blog on January 20th. At the same time, my own determination to do so was strengthened daily by the events leading up to Inauguration Day. Bush may not have listened to Cubans, but Obama listens to the wrong Cubans. As soon as it is possible for him to do so, and sooner even than most of us expect, the juggernaut of normalization will roll over every Cuban on the island, leaving them parallel with their surroundings. There is nothing that can be done to stop him and much that we must do to prepare ourselves, as best as we can, for the greatest defeat we have ever sustained in our struggle against tyranny in our country.

In 1959, the United States installed Castro in power and it has been the guarantor of Communism in Cuba since 1962. What it has not done, however, is to underwrite the enterprise. That was a task left to America's enemies. This is going to change now. Cuba will remain the only Communist state under U.S. military protection but now it will also enjoy all the benefits of commerce with this nation, or leastwise its oppressors will. After defaulting on every foreign creditor and exhausting every line of credit while amassing the largest per capita indebtedness in the world, the Castro regime expects and has probably already received assurances that Obama will rescue it, ignoring the floating corpses of all previous "saviors" who have ever extended a lifeline to it.

Since there can be no resumption of diplomatic relations with Communist Cuba until it settles U.S. claims against it, Obama will float the regime a loan so that it can pay pennies on the dollar for the properties it confiscated and nationalized before Obama was born, receiving in return clear title to them, which will enable it to sell those same properties at market value to a new generation of greedy and ignorant American investors, who will pour billions into the island with the assurance that the U.S. government will bail them out when the regime decides again that seizing American assets is more beneficial than trading with the enemy.

The biggest losers in this arrangement will be the Cuban people, who will not regain their liberty, but become subject to the exploitation of even more foreigners. Their masters will multiply but the quality of their lives will not improve. A prosperous tyranny is always to be more feared than one on the verge of economic collapse. The means of repression will expand and be fortified with the profits that the regime will reap from trade with the U.S. There will be no sharing of the wealth, however, because economic rights always anticipate political rights, and a regime that has always regarded both as anathema will not open the door to one knowing that it leads to the other.

The result of "normalization" (what a quaint word as if any relationship with a regime like Castro's could ever be anything but abnormal!) will prove detrimental to all parties except Castro and his henchmen. Those who espouse rapprochement do so because they hope to profit from the suffering of the Cuban people. Obama, besides acting on his ideological affinities with Castro, hopes to score a cheap coup de theatre by renewing relations with Communist Cuba, which the media are sure to represent as the greatest diplomatic feat in history, surpassing the opening of Japan by Perry or of China by either Marco Polo or Nixon. American businessmen, industrialists and agronomists, who have spent 8 years drooling about the prospects of trade with Cuba as Bush dangled that putrid carrot before them, will trample one another like elephants even before they reach the cliff.

To do business with Cuba will become more important than to do justice to Cubans. Human rights there will become as irrelevant as human rights in China without the Cuban people ever being compensated with an extra bowl of porridge for surrendering to the stomach what rightly belongs to the spirit.

This is what the election of Barack Obama means to Cubans and why tomorrow will always be a day of mourning for our country.

For my part, I prefer to mourn in private, which is the reason that I have decided to close the Review of Cuban-Americans Blogs tomorrow.

SAN JUAN Puerto Rico - While Cuba played the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic, a spectator in the stands raised a sign saying: "Down with Fidel," sparking an international incident that escalated Friday with the velocity of a major league fastball.
The image of the man holding the sign behind home plate was beamed live Thursday night to millions of TV viewers - including those in Cuba. The top Cuban official at the game at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan rushed to confront the man.

Puerto Rican police quickly intervened and took the Cuban official _ Angel Iglesias, vice president of Cuba's National Institute of Sports _ to a nearby police station where they lectured him about free speech.

"We explained to him that here the constitutional right to free expression exists and that it is not a crime," police Col. Adalberto Mercado was quoted as saying in El Nuevo Dia, a San Juan daily.

The brouhaha gathered steam Friday when Cuba's Communist Party newspaper, Granma, called the sign-waving "a cowardly incident." Cuba's Revolutionary Sports Movement exhorted Cubans to demonstrate in Havana late Friday, saying U.S. and Puerto Rican authorities were involved in "the cynical counterrevolutionary provocations."

The Cuban Baseball Federation, in a statement released Friday in San Juan, said authorities failed to provide security and preserve the spirit of the sporting event, and "evidently had no intention of doing so."

The Cubans considered withdrawing from the tournament because of "the lack of security and respect" but decided to remain after Puerto Rican promoters made guarantees, the federation said in a statement without elaborating.

An anti-Castro Web site, therealcuba.com, identified the protester only as Enrique, and carried his own account of the incident.

Enrique said that during the warmup before the game, he flashed another sign denouncing Castro _ this one saying "Baseball players yes, Tyrants no" _ to the Cuban leader's son, Tony Castro. Tony Castro is the Cuban team doctor.

"He looked down and kept walking and I shouted 'Eso es para tu papa' (That is for your dad). ... I know he heard that," Enrique said, according to the account in the Web site.

Mercado said the spectator, and a second one who also waved signs, had tickets for the section behind home plate, but had moved out of their seats closer to the view of the TV cameras. Cuban state TV was showing the ESPN signal and the anti-Castro signs were briefly visible on television in Cuba.

Police later told the pair to return to their seats, Mercado said, adding that Iglesias was never under arrest.

"The Cubans were upset with the incident that happened last night, and they want to make sure it doesn't happen again," said John Blundell, spokesman of Major League Baseball, which helped establish the tournament. "We are doing everything that we can to ensure the safety of fans and the delegations."

Cuba downed the Netherlands 11-2. Cuba has also beat Panama in the first round of competition.

FAN REACTION

Gosh, I wonder what the "Pators for Peace" will have to say about this.

I can just hear El Jefe's apologists now: "Why did those pesky protesters have to go and politicize such a beautiful event?"

Posted by: Ralph at March 10, 2006 08:51 AM
Suppress all information! Ah, the beauty of totalitarianism. Er....did I say beauty?

Posted by: Dave S. at March 10, 2006 08:56 AM
"[F]our credentialed members of the Cuban delegation...."

Those thugs are probably listed as "assistant coaches" on the Cuban travel roster.

Posted by: Ralph at March 10, 2006 09:00 AM
People were arrested at the state of the union for wearing t-shirts...if it's unacceptable in that context (which is clearly more political than baseball), then why is this different?

Posted by: Andrew at March 10, 2006 09:51 AM
Why, oh why, do the bitter-enders work so hard to concoct excuses for Fidel? It would be laughable if not so disgusting.

Posted by: Ralph at March 10, 2006 09:54 AM
Its the same as our (p)resident having designated protest areas. To hell with Fidel and to hell with Bush!

Posted by: Steve at March 10, 2006 10:33 AM
The prohibition on T-shirts wearing slogans (which was enforced on both a Democrat and a Republican) is a rule of Congress. It's not hard to imagine why a legislative body might want to have rules against aggressive sloganeering.

It's not as though people have any difficulty speaking their minds in the District of Columbia.

Posted by: Floyd McWilliams at March 10, 2006 11:03 AM
However, what would have happened if it was someone at Yankee Stadium with a sign that said, "Bush is a Murderer".... different results I fear. And I know for a fact that if you had a sign at Fenway that was deemed inappropriate, it would either be confiscated or some drunk idiot would threaten you and you could both be escorted out, regardless of whether punches were thrown or not. I don't think it would be deemed appropriate in any ballpark in this country to have a sign which insulted a players country of origin. And for a country like Cuba, where a great deal of its citizens adore Fidel Castro and are quite proud of him regardless of what we think or what he's actually done, to insult Fidel is to insult Cuba. Does anyone have the "I'd die to protect" right to make any damn sign they want and display it? - Of Course they do, but freedom of speech and freedom to be offensive on private property are conflicting ideals in this day and age. Ask every protester active in this country. Don't like Cuba? root for the opposing team...

Posted by: Chas at March 10, 2006 11:03 AM
To hell with YOU Steve!

Posted by: BeerDog at March 10, 2006 11:05 AM
Leave the politics out of this. I'm a free expression believer, but I'm sure the only motive for this was provocation, it had nothing to do with conscience. You don't take these kind of peaceful events to make political statements. Shame on Cuba though if they withdrawal from the event, it would be another clear confirmation that there is a dictator running the country.

Posted by: Salome at March 10, 2006 11:24 AM
Someone should advise Fidel's secret-police thugs (and any other apologist for the Maximum Leader) else who doesn't get it) that their jurisdiction doesn't extend to persons living in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Posted by: Ralphie at March 10, 2006 11:36 AM
Both houses of Congress have dress codes and rules. For instance, you can't wear a hat inside, at least not when I visited, and both times were in the mid nineties.

Also, the President doesn't have designated protest areas, the city of Washington DC does. This isn't anything new. Surprisingly, that city, like most, doesn't want protests to affect the ability of uninvolved citizens to go about their day. Thusly, they are required to obtain permits to protest in certain areas, and can do so to their hearts delight.

I hardly think a sign that proclaims "Abajo Fidel" offensive, especially when the person holding it would have been in a house of pain had he displayed it in his former stomping grounds. It is sad that a person who has to sneak out of a totalitarian regime to freely express himself is still attacked by that regime when stating his displeasure. Luckily, the police in Puerto Rico weren't trained in the same academy as their counterparts in Cuba.

Posted by: The Nick at March 10, 2006 12:27 PM
Did anyone really think there wouldn't be some controversy with Cuba in this? I applaud the person who used their FREE SPEECH capabilities. He didn't call Fidel a murderer. Cuba should leave if they demand special treatment. I really want them there, but at what cost? You think people adore Fidel? Well, knowing somebody who was recently there you can't even mention his name on the street for fear of being arrested by secret police.

Posted by: Nate at March 10, 2006 12:30 PM
"The prohibition on T-shirts wearing slogans (which was enforced on both a Democrat and a Republican) is a rule of Congress. It's not hard to imagine why a legislative body might want to have rules against aggressive sloganeering."

Actually, they don't. When pressed on the matter, the security people who pulled out the congressman's wife apologized and stated that they acted too quickly and that there was no law, rule or anything that allowed them to legally yank the woman out.

Posted by: stanley at March 10, 2006 01:04 PM
While I personally agree with the "Abajo Fidel" sentiment, I find most salient Chas' point that he doesn't "think it would be deemed appropriate in any ballpark in this country to have a sign which insulted a players country of origin." and that INappropriate signs/t-shirts/behavior are all cause for a security escort from the stadium. If a BoSox fan can't wear a "Yankees Suck" t-shirt to Fenway, I don't think it's too much to ask a fan at the WBC to refrain from directly insulting the leader of Cuba.

Posted by: Dave S. at March 10, 2006 01:53 PM
You mean if a citizen of Puerto Rico were wearing a "US Out" or "Statehood Now" or whatever T-Shirt, or if someone were wearing a "Stop Bush's War" shirt, he should be tossed out of the stadium? Wow, I love how this international event is showing us the supporters of free expression. So he was "insulting" another country's dictator? Tough. It's also especially galling that people are supporting thuggery conducted by Castro's secret police on foreign soil.

Posted by: Ralph at March 10, 2006 02:39 PM
There is a treasure trove of information relating to the whole
MLB involvement with Cuba & related baseball matters
that's being missed with the discussion here. Certain
individuals would be delighted about that.

Posted by: susan mullen at March 10, 2006 02:55 PM
There are no citizens of Puerto Rico. People who live there are citizens of the USA.

Posted by: Adam Villani at March 10, 2006 06:54 PM
One other angle on this that I think is important. The signholder was surely banking on his sign appearing on Cuban TVs. He knew that anti-Castro protests aren't allowed in Cuba. This was one of the only ways of showing the Cuban people that they have support from the outside.
Not that I'm a fan of politicizing sporting events but I think that's a good enough exception.

Posted by: Peder at March 10, 2006 09:48 PM
Oh, come on. Citizen, as in a person who lives and works and eats and sleeps and whatever the hell else there. But nice rhetorical dodge, anyway. Does it somehow diminish the point if I clarify by saying that Castro's thugs are roughing up US citizens?

Posted by: Ralphie at March 11, 2006 02:07 AM
I'm not trying to diminish anything. I applaud the police there in Puerto Rico heartily. I'm just making a correction.

Posted by: Adam Villani at March 11, 2006 03:27 PM
I apologize, Adam. Thanks.

Posted by: Ralphie at March 11, 2006 03:40 PM
Well none of this would have happened if MLB hadn't invited a country with a ruling regime with so much blood on its hands. Now MLB is enforcing a "sportsmanship" rule and confiscating signs. Great now MLB is an accomplice to fidel in muzzling people. Get this into your thick skulls Cuba and its policies is not morally equivalent to our country and its policies. Every single day of the year there are people protesting outside our president's house. They protest outside his ranch they protest everywhere he goes and nobody gets arrested. In Cuba you do that and you'll be in the gulag before you can snap your fingers.

Posted by: conductor at March 12, 2006 01:10 AM
Irregardless of how one feels about Fidel Castro, this is not the place for this type of protest. Had this been an anti-Bush sign it would have not been appropriate either.

One simply cannot politicize this type of thing and hope for it to succeed.

It is good that the Cuban players have the opportunity to play, but this kind of thing could put their future participation in jeopardy and that would be a shame.

Posted by: Mark Spangler at March 12, 2006 11:03 AM
Mr. Spangler,

I guess your point of view is that the show must go on no matter the cost. It doesn't matter that 11 million people live in virtual slavery in Cuba. It doesn't matter that those players aren't allowed to leave their hotel or to mingle with the fans or do what they please like all the other players can. It just doesn't matter as long as this tournament goes off. You would have made a great sports fan during the 1936 olympics. What's not appropriate is trying to make GWB and fidel castro moraal equals. That kind of statement reveals your ignorance. Let me ask you something would south africa been invited to this tournament if it were 20 years ago? DOUBT it. And if it had, people protesting the apartheid regime would not have been silenced. In fact the media would have had a field day with it. But since the MSM never saw a left wing dictatorship it didn't like, we don't get to see any reporting on the realities of Cuban life. This tournament WOULD have been a perfect platform for the media to reveal these realities to the American public but they just aren't interested.

El fuetazo de Varela

el fuetazo® by varela: RUINAS DE MAÑANA

©varela

A Monroe Correctional Complex prisoner with a history of mental illness was rushed to the hospital Thursday after his second attempt to cut off his penis.

The prisoner, 49, already had amputated much of his genitals several years ago, prison spokeswoman Cathy Kopoian said.

On Thursday the man apparently used a razor blade to cut off what remained.

He was rushed by medics to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett with serious cuts to the groin, she said. Doctors there sent the man to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, the region's trauma center.

Prisoners are permitted basic necessities, including razors, under state law, she said. Prison officials didn't consider the man at risk to harm himself.

The man was convicted July 1, 1977, for aggravated first-degree murder, Kopoian said. He's serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole in the special offenders unit, a part of the prison reserved for treating prisoners with mental health issues.

Self-administered penile amputations are a dangerous and painful form of self-mutilation, said Dr. Thomas Walsh, a urologist at UW Medical Center, a specialty treatment center.

"It can be life-threatening," he said.

If blood loss can be stopped, the patient usually can be stabilized. Prison officials didn't know the prisoner's condition Thursday afternoon.

Whenever possible, doctors attempt to reattach the organ, a complicated and costly procedure, Walsh said. The success rate is typically around 50 percent.

Penile amputation is a rare condition and doctors in Seattle deal with only about one case each year, the urologist said.

This kind of self-mutilation typically is caused by psychosis, said Dr. Bruce Gage, the chief of psychiatry for the state Department of Corrections.

"People who cut themselves or hurt themselves are rarely trying to kill themselves," he said.

More often they are trying to bring about some kind of change or find relief from inner pain, Gage said.

Other psychiatric problems, including personality disorders, also can cause people to hurt themselves. It's most often not associated with people with gender identity issues, he said.

Treatments vary depending on the underlying condition, Gage said.

Fantomas did it in 2006 . Millions of Cubans inside the prison saw his Abajo fidel sign , even Fariñas saw it from his bed.

These whack job loosers are gifts that keep on giving, to the tyranny that is, in reality they are an embarrasment to all freedom loving Cubans.

Coronel Glenn Alex Crowther.

So how are we doing?
By Henry Louis Gomez, on February 21, 2009, at 1:02 pm
It's been more than two full weeks since we launched the new edition of Babalu Blog and we've gotten a lot of favorable responses but also some that were unfavorable.

So I'm wondering what did we miss? What do you like or not like? Let's be clear, we're on WordPress to stay, but there are elements we can change.

One of the primary things we wanted out of the redesign was to go to a three column layout. Our sidebar was becoming too long and having the second sidebar helps that out dramatically. Curiously it was the sidebars that created the most debate between Val and I. One approach is the one you see here with the sidebars of equal widths and with everything centered. Other approaches would be to have the sidebars be of different widths to accommodate the content and to have all of the content left-justified. I might do some screen captures of both and see what you guys think.

Anyway I'd love to hear any feedback that will make the Babalu layout more appealing.

Also I know the new comments system is causing some grief for some users. For those who haven't really figured it out yet, it's really simple. You must be a registered user (subscriber) to comment. I created a tutorial that you can read below the fold.

You know, I don't have a problem with gays. And I really wouldn't mind it if the government got out of the business of sanctioning relationships. But what I can't stand is the idea that if you don't vote the way Sean Penn wants you to vote then you're an evil wrong-headed person. Fuck Sean Penn. Democracy means sometimes you lose. You got your "elegant" president, be happy with that and stop lecturing those of us who didn't vote for him.

Henry must be commenting from La Casa de los Gansos, it is no secret here in Miami that Henry "doesn't have a problem with gays" it's also easy to tell that he is a mariconsón, his mannerisms are well hidden, but, once in awhile he slips, let's his guard down for a brief moment and the giveaway is noticeable to the keen eye, he usually slips when tired, upset or stressed, the Jesuits of Belen must have practiced personal and anatomical counseling to Enriquito while he studied there, son una partida de maricones pretendiendo ser cristianos y a Henry le gusta jugar pelota, su posición favorita es de receptór o catcher.

For those of us familiar with NYC, a protest in front of the Cuban Mission on a Sunday is extremely, extremely ineffectual. Although there are residential buildings in the vicinity 38th and Lexington Avenue where the Cuban Mission to the U.N. is located, it is mostly dead on weekends. On weekdays, it's a different story. After all, it is just a few blocks away from Grand Central Station--where millions of people coming to and from work converge-- and there are tens of thousands of business people in the area on weekdays.

What a waste of energy and resources. I wonder if the organizer of this protest thought this out?

What else do you expect from the cadre at that blog and its tyrannical masters Fantomas?

Did you think that they would support anything or anyone that would not place them in a protagonistic leadership position?

With them there's no such thing as sharing for the good of the cause, forget about them ever contemplating supporting someone else's initiatives without taking any credit, modesty is a foreign concept to them.

Fantomas you must always remember that they are not Cubans or Cuban-Americans, they are Americans that deceive themselves into believing they are Cuban.

You have said it many times, when Cuba is free of Castro, if any American-Cubans visit they would return to the US in less than a week, the real Cuba is as foreign to them as Latin America is to most gringos.

Make no mistake about it, these people are wannabe gringos who were born gringos, but the caucasian gringos consider them (and us) spicks no matter how white they (and we) are.

It is beyond me why we don't hear anyone talking about the ONE MEASURE that IF TAKEN would bring about the end of tyranny in Cuba. No big thinkers talk about it, no politicians, no Castro haters...NOONE. It's beyond me.
Here it is: THE ABOLISHMENT OF THE CUBAN ADJUSTMENT ACT. The political pressure inside Cuba would reach the boiling point in just months once everyone knew that the only way to improve their situation would be to fight the regime. The cuban government makes life difficult because they WANT Cubans to leave and the later send remittances to their family members. The government would be forced, for the first freaking time ever, to improve the living conditions of the citizenry because the escape valve would have been sealed. The U.S. government could sell the abolishment of the Cuban Adjustment Act by saying that all we want to do is eliminate the human trafficking and providing a safer, more orderly way for Cubans to migrate to the U.S. while in reality only granting entry into the U.S. to those who qualify for political asylum. Yes, in order to migrate to the U.S. a person would have to fight against the tyranny and prove that they have suffered from political persecution in order to be granted asylum.
Within five years I guarantee you that Cuba would be free!!!
That’s the ticket ladies and gents!!!

Fanto old buddy,
I do beleive its time to trade the rubber on your head for a well crafted aluminum foil helmet. Those alien transmissions are really getrting to you and making you act in very odd ways. I suggest you use the Reynolds Heavy Duty foil four layers thick, and a good model to use for the shape of the headgear is the present US Army issued helmet. Note how well it covers the ears and back of the head. Do not skimp on materials! A well made helmet should be comfortable as well as durable, and you can always tweak its shape with the four layer Heavy Duty material.
Good luck and lets keep those unwanted radiowaves away.

(Xinhua)

3 YEARS LATER..THE TRUTH COMES AFLOAT

MSM JACK CURRY NYT MISSES HIS MARK

---------------------------
March 11, 2006
BASEBALL; Crowd Control at Classic Is a Sign of the Times
By JACK CURRY
Several hours before Puerto Rico clobbered Cuba, 12-2, Friday night, some San Juan police officers, Major League Baseball security officials and the game's promoters filed past two glass doors into the staff office of the World Baseball Classic here.

It was at least the third meeting of the day that baseball officials had about crowd control at Cuba's games. The issue surfaced when two fans held up a sign that was critical of President Fidel Castro during Cuba's game with the Netherlands on Thursday.

Kevin Hallinan, baseball's senior vice president for security, and Enrique Cruz, the promoter here, said the fan who took the sign into Hiram Bithorn Stadium should have been stopped. They said it violated the tournament's code of conduct against displaying signs considered offensive or political in nature.

''This tournament is for seeing the best baseball players in the world,'' Cruz said. ''It's not for seeing a sign. It's O.K. to say, 'Hi, Mom.' It's not O.K. to make a political statement.''

Hallinan said Major League Baseball was sensitive to provocative signs and that none would be allowed at future games. An announced sellout crowd of 19,736 was raucous as Cuba visited Puerto Rico for the first time in 13 years and ended up succumbing in seven bleak innings because of the mercy rule.

''We're just going to try and stop the signs at the front gate,'' Hallinan said.

Although Hallinan called that a challenging assignment, stadium officials were definitely trying to stop every sign. There was a much heavier security presence as fans in long lines waited to be patted down and have their bags searched. Anyone with a sign, regardless of how innocent the message, had it taken away.

Christian Ramos brought a sign reading, ''ESPNDeportes, Puerto Rico, #1.'' It was compact enough for him to fold and store in a manila folder. Despite Ramos's repeated protests, an official confiscated it.

''It's Cuba; it's all about politics,'' Ramos said.

Actually, for a few hours it was all about baseball for Puerto Rico. Bernie Willams hit a two-run homer and Carlos Beltran ripped a three-run shot as Puerto Rico went 3-0 in the first round. Cuba was 2-1 but was surely deflated by Friday's embarrassing loss, one of the worst in its history. Both teams advanced with the Dominican Republic and Venezuela to the second round, which begins here Sunday.

Less than an hour before the game, another official was hastily taping signs on the stadium walls that repeated the code of conduct. The eye-catching white-and-black signs said ''Warning'' at the top and advised fans against having signs that were political, offensive or in poor taste.

That stance differed from what the San Juan police said. Col. Adalberto Mercado told El Nuevo Dia on Thursday that the police had explained to the Cuban delegation that people in Puerto Rico had a constitutional right to free expression. Mercado added that there were no laws against holding up signs.

Pedro Toledo, the San Juan police chief, told The Associated Press that his officers would not enforce the ban and would ''not interfere with any type of expression.''

The Cubans were upset that the sign held by Enrique Rubio and then by Jose Garcia Pino, two Cuban-American fans, could be seen behind the plate in the international television feed being received in Cuba.

Rubio's foldable foam sign included two messages. On one side, he wrote, ''Abajo Fidel,'' or ''Down with Fidel.'' On the other, he wrote, ''Peloteras? Sí. Tiranos? No,'' or ''Players? Yes. Tyrants? No.'' Hallinan said he figured Rubio had hidden the sign under his shirt upon entering, but Rubio said it was too big for that.

''It's some kind of foam material, and it closes so it's great for a sign,'' Rubio said. ''It was $5.69 at Walgreens.''

The Cubans boycotted the postgame news conference to protest the anti-Castro sentiment and also briefly threatened to withdraw from the tournament. Tournament organizers did not take Cuba's threat seriously, thinking that the Cubans made it to emphasize their anger.

In a statement released by the Cubans on Friday, they said that they had seriously considered leaving. But, in a passage that was underlined, the Cubans said they had received guarantees from promoters that this type of anti-Castro sentiment would not occur again.

In Havana, meanwhile, The A.P. reported that hundreds of Cubans protested outside the United States diplomatic mission. One countered the anti-Castro sign with a ''Down with Bush'' sign.

After Rubio held up the sign in the first two innings, he was asked to leave the prime seat because he did not have a ticket for it. Pino, whom Rubio said he did not know, took the sign and held it for the last few innings of Cuba's 11-2 victory Thursday.

Four or five members of the Cuban delegation unsuccessfully tried to get Pino to discard the sign. At least two were ushered out of the stadium by the police. One of the men removed was Angel Iglesias, a vice president for Cuba's National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation.

When the Cuba-Puerto Rico game started Friday, the stands were packed and no signs were visible. Rubio, the man who paid $5.69 to create the sign that caused a commotion, watched on television.

Rubio si estuvo en ese juego . El no estaba viendolo por television
Also Rubio did have prime seats purchased , la cosa fue que el se movio 3 or 4 rows but in the same section 75 dollars a pop

VAL'S TILT IS OPEN NOW . HE NEEDS A FUCKING HAIRCUT

SE PARECE A BUCKWEATH EL JABAO DE BAYAMO

By Val Prieto, on February 26, 2009, at 4:50 pm
I bought a used near mint condition Nissan Pathfinder about three years ago for a great price. Never gave me any trouble except for three weeks ago when it just refused to start. As the saying goes, when it rains it pours.

And believe me, it's been monsooning lately at the Prieto household. Not only have I had to take a pay cut at work since we basically have no new projects, but the Mrs is a Real Estate agent and, if you follow the market, you know how bad the real estate business is. So we've had to cut some major corners at home and even had to resort to borrowing a few bucks here and there to make ends meet.

Thus when the Pathfinder broke down last month, since I still have my beat-up 1992 Isuzu pick-up, I chose to drive my trusty truck and leave the Pathfinder parked at the house and not worry about coming up with the money at the time to fix the car.

Unfortunately, the Isuzu, having seen much better days, started acting up this week. I was taking a load of tree and shrub cuttings to the city dump on Monday - my forced day off - when I pressed down on the brake and the Isuzu wouldn't stop. The brake pedal went down to the floor board. I almost ate the car in front of me, saved only by a quick pull on the emergency brake.

Usually, when you press on your brake pedal and it quietly goes all the way down it can mean a couple of things, mainly: air in the brake lines; a brake fluid leak or an issue with the master cylinder.

I checked the brake fluid at the dump and found the well full, which meant that most likely the master cylinder - the more expensive option of the above - is shot on the old Isuzu. I could keep driving the truck being very careful, pumping on the brakes every time I need to stop, but, driving in Miami is dangerous enough. It's downright suicidal to drive in Miami with brake problems.

Thus, my quandary on Monday: do I fix the Isuzu or do I fix the Pathfinder? Either way, I had no money for either.

So I called Roger.

Roger, "my mechanic", is more than just my mechanic, he's a pretty darned good friend. He's been keeping all the cars and trucks in my family in shape and tune for years and he's always - always - there when I need him. When my wife had her last car accident - yes, her "last" as there have been a few - Roger got to the scene before I did. When the Pathfinder gave out and I called, he walked me through a bunch of things to check on the car - spending over an hour on the phone with me - and when none of them seemed to be the problem, he just said "tow truck will be on its way." Of course, I told him to hold off - without telling him that I couldn't afford to get it fixed. Roger will have twenty cars in his shop and he'll take care of me or my wife or my parents or anyone I send him ahead of all of them.

When I call Roger, he always refers to me as "el peor enemigo de fidel castro en el internet." "fidel castro's arch internet nemesis." And Roger has an incredible Cuban life story that he shared with me and which I have his handwritten account of here in my office. I am working on translating and transcribing it and will have it published one of these days.

I called him on Monday.

"Roger?"

"El que habla."

"Es el peor enemigo de fidel castro..."

"Dimelo muchacho. How are you? How's the family?"

"Todo el mundo bien, Roger. I got a problem."

And before I could say anything else he asked "Where are you?"

"At home, it's the Path..."

"The tow truck is on the way."

Half hour later the tow truck was at my house and the Pathfinder was loaded up and taken to Roger's shop.

The next morning he calls and tells me the truck is fixed. The ignition relay on the Pathfinder was shot. I asked him how much it was and was about to tell him that I am basically broke when he interrupted:

"Have I asked you for any money?"

Roger knows the dire economic situation we have and wouldn't hear of any talk about me paying him right now.

I'm now driving the Pathfinder, which is purring like a kitten, thanks to Roger.

I've said this a million times before but it bears repeating, once again: I don't have millions in the bank and am not rich. But what I do have are the best, most incredible friends and loved ones that anyone could ever even imagine and who are always there for me, no questions asked.

You'll notice another ad on the Pinar del Rio sidebar now. It's for Sierra Auto Service, Roger's shop. Trust me folks, I cant recommend him highly enough. Roger is to auto mechanics what Shakespeare is to English literature, only friendlier and with a Cuban accent and grease laden hands. Make sure to tell Roger that I sent you, so you can have a couple laughs at my expense.

Oh, and just above that new ad is the donation button, please consider dropping a few bucks in the old till. It would sure help me out right now to be able to afford stuff like, say, a haircut. I haven't had one since December and I'm looking a lot like Link from the Mod Squad.

Val,

You know what you have people that help you?

Because of your undying dedication to the cause of a free Cuba with no strings attached.

There are many Cuban-Americans living in Miami with way more financial means that you and the ones who contribute to Babalu, and yet they do very little for the cause.

If these individuals would put a small tiny fraction of their wealth into promoting freedom and democracy in Cuba and to influence American public opinion in our favor, we would not be in the uphill battle that we're today.

And speaking of damning examples, how about your posts alleging that George Bush doesn't care about dead soldiers and their families, comparing Cuban-Americans to a lynch mob, calling Val a Cuban-American thug, defaming George and Cigar Mike and now this masterpiece which hasn't been elevated to post status yet.

You see, I can come back with just as many, if not more, examples of YOUR lack of reason. Go ahead and complain about others. That's fine. But don't pretend you're above all this because you've proven time and time again that
you're not.

The act's getting old, Rick.

Robert:

When it comes to Ricky-boy, it's a simple case of liberalitis; a common condition among liberals where they create rules and limitations all who disagree with them must follow, but they can ignore. It's the only way they can level the playing field. Devoid of any honest intellectual thought, they must put limitations on those that do have them so they can play along. Otherwise, they just get slaughtered.

As much as I disagree with Ricky-boy, I can't say I blame him. If I were in his position I'd probably do the same thing.

Robert:

I'm not claiming I'm an angel, Robert, and it's disingenuous of you to say that I'm holding myself out as one. I have admitted a number of times that I take babalu to task a lot. I don't deny it. But I have also complimented them on the occasions that I thought warranted such praise. It is more than I can say for them.

Look, I came into this comment thread to have a discussion. Your boy Moneo threw the first punch. How's 'bout giving your bro the same lip service you give the guy from Broward, Robert?

Val Prieto is a thug. A thug threatens people. A thug boasts about his handgun collection. A thug intimidates people. A thug is vulgar. Need I say more?

I've already addressed "defaming" George and Mike in another comment. You're dead wrong for all the reasons I spelled out there.

And, George, well, the vitriol that George spews about Muslims and the hate he expresses about people who are pro-choice leads anyone to believe that that guy might be capable of doing anything. He might be capable and he probably has wet dreams about it. Listen, the guy apparently cruises the net using IP masking software. Why does someone do that? Many reasons including saying and doing things that he wouldn't want to have traced back to him.

Alberto, for a guy who despises half of his fellow Americans, you truly do have a home at babalu and I am damn proud that you don't like me.

Robert, I hope you do "elevate this to post status" but do me a favor and include all of it, number one, and number two, make sure you explain what "poof" means.

.

8:51 PM, February 25, 2009

Alberto de la Cruz said...
Who ever said I disliked you, Ricky-boy? The truth is I find you to be quite entertaining. You seem to have no limits to how low you'll stoop and watching you wallow in the mud and roll around in it has a slapstick quality to it that makes it hard not to chuckle. But don't think too much about it though--what makes you funny is the fact that you think you're being serious.

Keep up the good work.

Paquito is my hero!

When Henry "El Tartamudo" Gomez says that Paquito D'Rivera is his heroe, it is the teenage girl that hides within Henry who spoke, here in Miami everyone - except Henry's wife - knows that the Philadelphia born Henry is a maricón, rumors abound about the cause of his tartamudes (stuttering), amon them there's one that implies that the Jesuits at Belen made a habit of using Henry to clean their toletes (pingas) with his mouth, that would not only explain his tartamudes, but also his habit of repeatedly saying "you know", Henry and Ziva share that bad habit, I wonder what caused Ziva la judia to practice it.

It will be a riot
Miami temblara

..................................

Val Prieto
That's Henry and me at the Cuba Nostalgia Convention back in 2007 (I'm the good looking one in the straw hat) posing with the BUCL Spain Campaign poster.

We've been invited back and we hope to once again wow and thrill the convention goers with the Babalú Pavilion. Of course, for that we need your help. We're probably going to be starting a few fundraising drives in the coming weeks even though the Convention is two months away.

But, as they say, it's never too early to start begging for cash. Please consider dropping a few dollars in the Babalu till via the donation button at the top of the Pinar del Rio sidebar. All proceeds received now may not go directly to the convention, but they will help me keep this place going steady.

We've begun working on a couple of things for the Convention itself and will be making announcements on same as soon as possible. Here's the Cuba Nostalgia web link so you all can start making plans to join us this year.

Now, please, scroll up and hit the donation button. Don't make me send a few Miami Mafia Wiseguys to your front doors.

You have the concept all wrong Fantomas, in order to attract comments a piece or an interesting essay has to be provided first, you are putting the cart before the horse, unless you know of a new concept or trick that has been proven to work as you've proposed, otherwise, the responsibility - that you acquired of your own volition - is yours, you must post an attractive, thought provoking comment or review, you'll then get your 2,000 comments.

Lets give him the 1700 an then worry about 2000

A few words about comments
One of the best things about the web is the interactivity it provides. Because of comments there is a give and take between the authors and the readers, and that is refreshing. But it also has its drawbacks. Because the topics covered here may be polarizing and controversial it may attract cranks, Castro apologists, propagandists, etc. Some readers may be well intentioned but don't realize that this is not their forum it is ours.

In previous incarnations of this site, we've been plagued by folks leaving comments that want to parse every single word, take offense to any perceived slight and refuse to accept clarifications or corrections to their assertions.

If you disagree with the opinions expressed on this site and are not satisfied by the response the authors offer to your questions or comments, please do yourself a favor and just be satisfied with knowing in your heart that you are right.

Some general guidelines about comments:

Anonymous comments are not accepted. It's too easy for the cranks too simply "hit and run". Disallowing anonymous comments has greatly reduced the amount of destructive comments we receive.

Comments that mischaracterize statements made by the blog authors will not be published.

Comments that quote official Cuban government sources and try to pass them off as factual will not be published.

Comments that use Wikipedia as a source will not be published. Wikipedia is only slightly more reliable and factual than the Cuban government.

Comments that attack this site, its authors, or the friends of its authors will not be published.

Excessively long comments will not be published.

A second set of comments to a post by readers who have previously commented on that post and had their comments addressed by the author may or may not be published at our discretion. If the conversation is productive and progressing, in our opinion, they will be posted. If the comments are redundant and overly nit-picky, for the sake of creating a false controversy, they will not be published.

We have been accused of being against free speech, of being hypocrites because we moderate comments in this way. You can rest assured that nobody is violating your rights to free speech when your comment is rejected.

The primary mission of this site is to provide a venue for our authors to express their opinions; as a result we always reserve the right to get in the last word. Comments are complementary to this site not vital to it.

You always have the option of emailing your comments if you want to have a
