Notable and Always Despicable: Starving Cubans Without a Pressure Cooker

"I'm so fucking sick of people complaining about the travel restrictions and the restrictions on remittances... If you're too fucking dense to understand that your family in Cuba is basically being held at gunpoint and that you are essentially sending the perp the money to buy the bullets to load into the gun he's holding at your family's head, then I don't think I can convince you otherwise. -- Val Prieto, "Make Check Payable to ...," Babalú, May 27, 2008

Val wrote another self-described "rant" today against remittances and exiles visiting their kin on the island. For once, however, he did not bring out his patented pressure cooker. I believe that some credit is due to RCAB for its disappearance from Val's bag of tricks. The idea behind it, that to increase the misery of the Cuban people is the best way to end it, has been around for a long time and will likely continue to guide those who believe that Castro cares about the suffering of the Cuban people and would diminish rather than increase it if he had the chance. The fact that all of Castro's hostages are expendable to him is no justification for regarding them as expendable ourselves. Starvation is a powerful weapon of control. Castro has used it against the Cuban people since the ration card was introduced 47 years ago. Denying food and other necessities to our brethren on the island is collaborating with Castro in their repression.

If Val still believes, as he once said, that only a river of blood could save the Cuban people, he is sabotaging his own fondest hopes by desiring to starve them before bleeding them. As I have pointed out on more than one occasion, a starving man has difficulty enough rising in the morning let along rising in arms in the afternoon. That's the reason Castro starves his people. That's also the reason Val should not wish to starve them since he believes that it is possible to topple Castro internally sans guns, tanks, planes, etc. Even I will acknowledge that it would be easier to topple Castro sans guns, tanks and planes than it would be to topple him sans food.

I'm sure that Val meant it sincerely, but conveying sincerity for him is a hard proposition without using the F-word and its variants. Sincere or not, this may just be the most unintentionally funny line that Val has ever written: "When I go to Cuba, when I step on Cuban soil once again, I don't want to be Valentin Prieto from Kendall. I want to be Valentin Prieto de Bayamo. An equal." Oh, brother. My first reaction is: "Val, you can be Valentín of Bayamo right now (or Valentín of Arabia, if you want). No one is stopping you." Of course, Val will not return to the Bayamo of his childhood till the descendents of our Founding Fathers duplicate the feat of 1868. If they only knew how anxiously he is waiting, his fellow bayameses would no doubt burn their city as of old and make its streets run red with their noble blood. Then Val shall have the red carpet that he craves when he "steps on Cuban soil once again" as brother and equal after that blood is congealed.

POSTSCRIPT:

"Freedom isn't going to knock on [the Cubans'] doors and ask to come in. It isn't going to arrive in a package from Hialeah or in the suitcase of a family member coming from abroad. Freedom is going to hide behind hunger. It's going to hide behind pain, it's going to hide behind sacrifice. It's going to hide behind bruises and in a pool of blood. And it's only going to be found when it is painstaking[ly] sought after, sought after with extreme hunger and empty bellies, with broken bones and bloody hands and with sheer desperation. There are 11 million people in Cuba, yet you see merely a handful standing firm in their convictions and against their government. Until that handful exponentially increases, not a damned thing will change." — Val Prieto, judging the Cuban people and passing sentence on them, Babalú, October 25, 2007

Since Val likes starvation so much, why doesn't he try to starve himself a little? Here they call it a diet and it's voluntary.

Very easy to starve Cubans in the island while Val roasts his pigs at man camp and eats it in his new renovated kitchen.

Val-- here is the challange-- for only one week ( not long !) tu familia solo puede consumir la misma cantidad de comestibles que reciben las familias cubanas.

only one week Val.... see if you can put your wife and kids through this test ..

I'd be afraid that he would eat all their food.

I'm beginning to think that this blog has become superfluous. What Val is doing to himself today I could not hope to do in 100 years of chipping away at his mask: he has pulled off the mask and what's beneath is more hideous than anyone (even me) ever supposed.

His hatred for the Cuban people is visceral and knows no limits. He considers them the enemy and feels that they must be utterly crushed before Castro is.

There is now a mutiny in earnest at Babalú. Not the "usual suspects" (who have all been banned), but his most reliable commenters have turned against him, and he, in turn, is lashing out against them with all his usual viciousness and ineffectiveness.

I said it a long time ago and repeat it now: Val Prieto is the most hated man in all the Cuban-American blogosphere, and now those who have long concealed their animosity for him are finally taking off their masks.

"Finally, you seem to have a hard time handling contrary opinions. You may want to consider eliminating the " Post a comment" part of your blog. I would hate to see that happen, because by discussing differences of opinion, in a respectful manner, I think we can all learn from each other. But, if you are going to get all angry and such when someone disagrees with you you might want to consider it. That way you can post about your position without the aggravation of having someone disagree." ~ LilGator

I believe that the regime has used the so called embargo (which they purposely choose to call el bloquéo,) through its many variances to its own advantage, we all know that not one of the high ranking members of the tyranny cares about Cuba or the Cuban people, they will continue to do whatever they have to do to maintain themselves in power and enjoying the many perks that their positions afford them no matter where the financial sources are from, if they were principled communist patriots as they are so fond of calling themselves, they would refuse to do business with all non-communist countries, but principled and patriotic they certainly ARE NOT.

During the 1960s and early 1970s those of us who lived in Cuba and had family members outside the country, were not able to receive any kind of remittances, the few and very short telephone calls that were allowed to connect by the tyranny were tapped, many a time we had to make do with sugared water (water that was provided once a week and low quality brown sugar,) guachipupa was a favorite replacement for the days of real soft beverages (refrescos,) just about any family that was not involved with the tyrannical government and even some who were, had to resort to destroying part of their patios by discarding the original flooring and planting vegetables and fruits and setting up cages to raise chickens and even pigs, something that had never before been done in the cities, for there had been no need to do so, sharing among neighbors and friends was quite common, we all had to resolver, that also meant selling and/or bartering whatever you were willing to part with in order to buy what was available via the bolsa negra (black market,) the lax atmosphere that by tyranny standards exists today was a part of a distant dream, not that I support the current oppression, but many of the things that are somewhat tolerated or ignored today were unthinkable back then, if one was lucky enough to have been able to receive a letter from outside Cuba (most correspondence was intercepted and discarded without ever reaching the intended recipient) that contained a thinly pressed stick of chewing gum, one had to be very careful not to be seen chewing it, for the consequences for getting caught were severe. Those were just a few of the many adaptations that we had to undergo in order to survive.

I won't use this or any other forum to accuse the people who now live in Cuba and depend on remittances or their relatives who are outside of Cuba and choose to send money to their relatives of being this or that or the other, however, I would suggest that they should focus their current dissatisfaction and anger toward the real culprit(s) of this situation, the tyranny in power in Cuba, that has caused this and so many other evils to affect our people, including the members of my family who still live in Cuba all of whom have chosen to accept no money from us here in the U.S.A., or our relatives in Spain, they have stated to us outside Cuba that the way to solve the problem is to not be a participant in providing the tyranny with any source of currency, apparently, not all Cubans in Cuba are willing to do their part to bring down the house of cards that is the Cuban tyranny, it is no accident that the nomenclatura has been desperately trying to convince the Cuban people that the beast is still alive, this is a crucial time for all freedom loving Cubans, especially those that live in Cuba, the suffering would last for the immediate future, but in the long term the outcome will be good for all Cubans, especially those that deserve it more than any others, the courageous dissidents and all other Cubans that have done their part within Cuba to put an end to the tyranny.

Corgiguy, I agree with you concerning what LG was apparently trying to state, however, the embargo has not remained as it was when it was instituted, the embargo has been diluted, the evidence is clear, so it cannot be honestly stated that it has not been effective for fifty years, a 1960 Buick is as much a Buick as a 2008 one is, but they are vastly different from each other, additionally, the context of the time within which the embargo has existed, especially vis-a-vis the tyranny's condition, has a lot to do with its efficacy or lack thereof, the devil is indeed in the details.

Manuel A.Tellechea said...

angel:

Your comment brought back many memories. Back in the Sixties, we used to send our correspondents in Cuba all kinds of capitalist "goodies" via an Air Mail letter. These included, most importantly, razor blades (before they began sorting the mail with metal detectors), packages of needles, little envelopes of seasoning or powdered drinks, an infinity of nicely flat items that would make the receipt of a letter from the U.S. an event of some note in Cuban homes.

whatever the reason the regime has outlasted the embargo, i just don't see how you can call that policy effective. Is time for some new thinking. Hey what do i know.

putting the politics aside what struck me about the exchange between LG and VAL&Co, is the abscence of sympathy for someone who is just trying to take care or help his loved ones. it seem a bit a cold to me.

Haven't you figured it out yet?

Of course Val doesn't care about Cubans on the island except as subjects in his Pavlovian experiments. In that respect he could not be more like Fidel.

Vana,
maybe Val has tourette's syndrome or maybe he simply believes the more F-bombs he drops adds impetus to his screed. Makes you think how he would address his wife to get her attention. Methinks, power goes to people's heads and Val is just loosing it. Time for Val to go for awhile maybe at a Buddhist camp . . .

I did not call it effective, in fact I know that it has not been effective, it could have been effective immediately after the collapse of the USSR, when the beast himself stated that the revolution was going to do whatever it took to survive, but we wound up with Bill Clinton in the W.H., Bubba was not interested in removing the tyranny. Spain got involved and propped the tyranny, by 1998 we wound up with Hugo Chavez in Venezuela and you know he has subsidized Cuba ever since. I do believe that the embargo would work well rather soon, but much depends on Venezuela's people and their willingness to get rid of Chavez.

putting the politics aside what struck me about the exchange between LG and VAL&Co, is the abscence of sympathy for someone who is just trying to take care or help his loved ones. it seem a bit a cold to me.

I don't know what Val does for a living and what kind of stress he may be exposed to not only at work, but also at home and with his anti-communist activities, usually intelligent people do not react with a plethora of profanity unless they are tremendously stressed, maybe the guy needs to take a break or a vacation without any contact with the outside world, I speak from personal experience, back in 2004 I had a very bad year all around, including two deaths in the family that hit me really hard, I began to use profanity a lot and realized that I was placing my family life in jeopardy, so my wife and me booked a mini villa in Puerto Rico and did not rent a car, I did not watch TV, counted till 1000 before getting upset and read a few books, including the Bible, I also prayed a lot, it all worked, I came back home a new man, maybe Val needs a Sabbatical, I may not always agree with his Cuba related points of view, but I can tell that he is stressed, I just do not believe that he harbors any evil intentions against our people. That's my opinion.

mat, i let you beat up on val&co you are good at it.

Imagine being Val's wife? he wouldn't have lasted very long as my husband, if he treats her the way he treats his commenters you gotta feel sorry for her.

I believe Val is an uneducated ill bred moron who cannot express himself without hurling profanities, he has no love for the Cuban people, of that I'm sure, he's so full of himself, yes I believe "blog father" has gone to his head.

Trust me I cuss, I'm no angel, but Val is just plain vulgar.

Vana: Well said. Val has turned out to be a major yahoo--a boorish and crass brute (redundancy intentional). It's a pity, for Babalu had the potential to be a great online promoter of Cuban freedom and independence. But it's hard to preach democracy while behaving like a vulgar unfeeling dictator. Hopefully, when Cuba is free, Bayamo will remain free of Sir Val, his page Henry, and his varlet George (H/T to MAT for the latter one).

The outburst and the full declaration of something everyone knew is quite clear.
Val feels betrayed by The Ladies in White and he can not turn and condemn them. He has made a lot of mistakes on his tenure as the father of Cuban/American blogs (his initial doubts about the sincerity of Yoani and then his praises, the Gloria Estefan debacle. You are dealing with a man who does not see farther than 2 inches from his troglodyte shaped head.
The moment the ladies in White release that letter, a letter that every Cuban in the island would sign, his reaction is visceral. All of these people in Cuba deserve to die because they are SO stupid. Val Prieto knows what is best for them , they do not care at all about Val Prieto’s call to shed blood, continue suffering and sacrifice. They have had that, yet he (as Castro himself would have done) calls for more of the same. I have studied Val’s reaction through his ups and downs and he presents the same characteristics of elitism, megalomania and dictatorial behavior as does Fidel Castro or Even Hitler.
I was an avid reader of BABALU and supported most of their points of view, but gradually something has overtaken Val, something that very well could be the realization that his nieces prediction that he was “destined to guiode the future of Cuba “(I paraphrase) is never going to be a reality, because he also suffer from a tremendous inferiority complex (Most dictators do) . As Cubans go Val is not a typical Cuban in his appearance, he is more akin to a native south American native. His last name does not help “Prieto” , That was something he had to suffer as a child (He will deny it but I bet a lot of Cuban playmates referred to him as El Prieto with the connotation of being “Black”
His profanities are clearly a reflection of what he sees at killcastro , he feels it works for them and no one finds anything wrong with it ( I do too, wonder why killcastro must use such violent and offensive language , when he is clearly an extremely intelligent and articulate individual. A couple of their posts have become classics in the Cuban/American sphere.)
Val Prieto is a man without a future, probably did not live up to what he thought his potential was and mistakenly felt that the cause of Cuba would redeem him and bring him to a position of some power or even recognition. Now he is lost , his last card has been played and he feels trapped by years of comenting about a Cuba he knows nothing about. A voice of political change must first hear the voices of those which will be affected by the change. Val Prieto has never bothered to listen to the Cuban population and considered everyone in the island guilty by association.
“When he returns to Bayamo” … That in itself is such a conflicting statement. What Bayamo? A Bayamo inundated with the blood he reiterates must be shed by Cubans in order to be free?
Finally I personally feel sorry for him, because nothing has turned out the way he foresaw it. This blog has seen to it that none of his major gaffes or plain stupidity goes unnoticed.
This last tirade is just a glipse of things to come. Right now he hates his blog, he hates the work because it is not bringing him forward . he wants to go and play football but he has dug a grave and now he has to either fill it up stand on top of it and become a different man , or most likely will jump into it and disappear as yet another frustrated wannabe.
