We have just been privy to a rumor which is quickly reaching the stage of speculation and may soon peak at "unsubstantiated but believed true," asserting that the Estefans have recruited, in Emilio's words, the "ultimate legend of old Cuba" for their much ballyhooed tribute to their homeland, 90 Millas (Ninety Miles), which already features such well-known "cubiche by adoption" musicians as Willie Colón and Carlos Santana. (The Estefans were the godparents at the adoption).
"There is none greater or better-known," enthused Emilio Estefan as 1980s disco diva Gloria Estefan smiled and nodded. "His name and Cuba's have been linked for more than 50 years, that is, for the entire span of his legendary career. Whether in Cuba, the United States or anywhere else in the world he needs no introduction, or if he did, it would be his own lyric condemnation of United Fruit's exploitation of banana pickers in the West Indies. To the best of my knowledge the Estefans have not asked Harry Belafonte to contribute to their album 90 Millas, although such is their reputation today for stupidity and avarice, that no one who is familiar with their dealings with Carlos Santana and subsequent explanation, would think them incapable of forging a mésalliance with Belafonte, who goes much beyond even Santana in his adulation of "Che" Guevara and support for the Castro regime. C'mon, Mr T.... this gotta be a parody, if it's not a comedic barb of yours to the butts of those two, then I promise that when I win the lotto I will set up a physical sciences foundation devoted to study the warped reality that the Eschefans inhabit. With those people I feel sometimes that we are all waking on a Moebius band, for much that we walk, we just turn around without noticing and we reach the same point without even changing directions.

The glory days of the Miami Sound Machine have long been gone. The mindless pop drivel they foisted on the country in the 80s (she was never a disco diva; that title, in my mind, belongs to the talented Donna Summer)did nothing but line the coffers of the Estefans. "Mi Tierra" was, I supposed, their version of a return to their Cuban roots. I understand that as "musicians" they want to work with others in a collaborative effort. However, tiene que hacerse de la vista gorda to overlook Santana's leftist leanings (he leans so much I'm surprised he doesn't do his studio sessions laying down). The best way to drive displeasure home is to simply not buy the album. Censorship is un-American. So when the album comes out, I will do what I have always done with their albums: ignore them, just like I ignored their protege, Jon Secada (remember him?)
By the way, Manuel, I enjoy your blog very much. I hope to become a frequent visitor! I have no clue what was happening at the Corral blog other than it seemed to have gotten hijacked again. Victor's ramblings gave me headaches after a while and I am convinced that the majority of those posts were put there simply to aggravate people.
