Babalú (Temporarily) Reaches 10,000th Post Milestone

Despite the pressure of these anxious days, I feel an obligation to the historical record to note that Babalú has published its 10,000th post. Of these, of course, at least half are derivative, consisting of a few paragraphs from a linked article framed by one or two lines at the top and (rarely) one or two more at the bottom. Still, however they got there, it is a notable achievement, and we may add that they would have reached that milestone even sooner if they had included in the tally all of Babalú's deleted posts. With unexpected candor, Val Prieto appeared to acknowledge as much when he referred to "10,000 actual posts." The use of the qualifier "actual" here has the meaning of "active," implying there are also posts which are inactive, that is, withdrawn from circulation after a brief but (too) eventful run. Indeed, we have rescued several of these disinherited posts and sheltered them here. These rejects are invariably the most interesting because they are the most contentious of Babalú's posts. The outcropping of the unfamiliar, the unexpected challenge, the failure to meet it, the fusillade of obscenity and the closure of discussion are generally what define these posts and the cause of their suppression. When the content of a given thread contradicts or even outruns the post, and the editors feel that they have lost control of it or are shown there at a disadvantage, it is generally consigned to oblivion. Val & Co.'s obsession with having thread mirror post, which it is impossible to do unless you choose and pick your commenters -- which, in fact, they do by means of threats, suspensions and bannings -- makes one wonder why they don't just close the comments period. It would save them a lot of trouble and gain them some respectability; but that would be too transparent and transparency is not their strong point.

In any case I should not be surprised if Babalú's "magnificent cadre" of 16 contributors mustered up 10,000 posts next year as part of the more-or-less loyal opposition, or even surpassed the myriad that it took them 5 years to amass as Bush's unconditional cheerleaders. Val was rewarded for his loyalty to our "great amigo" with conference calls to (staged) Cuban policy meetings and an invitation to this year's May 20th celebration at the White House. There will be no Cuban Independence fete next year if Barack Obama is elected president, though perhaps a July 26th bash. If Val ever entertained hopes of sleeping in the Lincoln bedroom (as Batista did in 1942) or getting the presidential Medal of Freedom for wearing his fingers to "bloody stumps" blogging for a free Cuba, the dream will have to be deferred. On January 20, 2009, Babalú's connection to the White House will be cut, or switched to Lincoln Díaz-Balart's office (if he's still around). Then Val's words against the interests of Cuban people will not be cited mischievously by The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, nor echoed by cabinet secretaries in support of the notion that "Cubans don't need money" in the wake of the hurricanes. Other horrors will befall the Cuban people courtesy of President Obama, Secretary of State for Latin American Affairs Greg Craig and future Ambassador to Cuba Wayne Smith. But neither for good (for a change) nor ill will Babalú be able to affect Cuba's destiny.

They have finally realized the real peril after months of bewailing the fact that John McCain is not the man that George Bush is (thank God!). His conservative bona fides fell short of their pristine expectations: McCain was not, to their great horror, a clone of Newt Gingrich or even Fred Thompson. For a while, they even expressed the hope that Obama might defeat McCain, which, supposedly, would guarantee that a "real conservative" would be elected in 2012. Somewhere along the line, however, as they became aware of Obama's Marxist alliances and associations, Val & Co. jumped on McCain's bandwagon and are now riding it to the end. If McCain prevails (as I believe he will), expect several hundred anti-McCain posts to be deleted. Val should perhaps have waited after the election to announce Babalú's 10,000th "actual post."

  1. Val, you Manuel, and the other Cuban exile bloggers should be more concerned what happens to you, rather then what happens to Cuba. As i suspect, all of those militant exile bloggers will be on top of any leftist President's Homeland Security list.

Also, Manuel, in your list, you left off the most important man, and by far the most dangerous. The man that will have full and complete powers over the Cuban exile community, and beyond: Charles Rangel.

Good luck Cuban exiles, you will need every bit of it. But remember, you asked for it.

  2. Charles Rangél, is a Puerto Rican mulato that has never been "outed," by outed, we mean that the constituency that he purportedly represents which is mostly comprised of Harlem which is about 98% black, does not know that Mr. Rangél is a Puerto Rican who happens to be "inter-racial" which we call mulato in Latin America; were the blacks from Harlem to find out about his "ethnic" lineage, they would vote him out of office before his term is even finished, for they are more bigotted than anyone else in America and are not afraid to display their bigotry because they know very well that they can get away with it.

  3. Manuel:

Who cares how many posts they have reached, no one reads them, no one comments there on fear of banishment and insults, that they reached that "milestone" is not surprising after all they have 16 writers, way too many if you ask me.

  4. Sen. Barack Obama is poised to be the nation's first black president, winning by a narrow margin, and enjoying very large Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress--but short of 60 seats in the Senate.

House Republicans face another slaughter. Democrats will make double-digit net gains, possibly pushing 30 seats. Many GOP incumbents are in danger, and Democrats are dominating in the open seats.

In the Senate, Democrats start with a gain of 4 seats, with another 7 GOP-held seats in play. We predict 58 or 59 Senate Democrats in the next Congress, but 60 is within reach.

Despite all this bad news, Sen. John McCain is not facing a blowout. Barring a last-minute Obama surge, McCain will post respectable numbers in the popular vote and the Electoral College. A McCain victory is not out of the question.

  5. Manuel, you are if anything, relentless, for a thread that is not extensive and considering that you've been under stress, you've managed to cover just about all the bases with this one, I must confess to you that I have not yet been able to grasp the origin or source of this animosity, the many details that are to be found within RCAB's foundational documents are not specific, at least not to me, I can understand the many differences of opinion and the effrontery that was apparently leveled against you, but the core as I said, still evades me, perhaps because the written word is not capable of conveying what the spoken word can, anyway, I don't always agree with you and sometimes I think that you push the limits of reason, not because you are unreasonable, but because you aren't, in other words, you are a reasonable man, which is why I find it unexpectedly odd that you sometimes chose to push those limits to the extent that you do, you remind me of Melvin "Little Mel" Purvis and the RCMP, when you set your mind on a mission, you follow through to the end.

  7. Anonymous 11:43, as I've said before, I believe that the McCain-Palin ticket will win by a landslide, it's not just that I opine that way out of the blues, or that I want it to be so and I'd chose to comment as such, my prediction is based on data that is available to me and the analysis includes not only that data, but also the data from similar election cycles as far back as 1948.

  9. Charles Rangél is a closeted Puerto Rican, you are correct sir, or is it ma'am?, anywho, Rangél is a "playa" who has managed to hoodwink his way into power while deceiving the dumb-asses that live within his district, the smallest of all the congressional districts in the country, he knows that his constituents want freebies and "wealth redistribution" and Charles delivers the crumbs aplenty while keeping most of the pie to himself, a limousine marxist is a title that fits him to a tee. You're also correct about the wanton and overt bigotry of his constituents, just ask any non-black student at Columbia University if they feel safe to walk the streets outside the heavily protected confines of its campus, many who have done it have never lived to tell the tale, but this bigotry is not limited to them, a majority of their kin are the same way.

  19. I'm always glad to see a clear and fair criticism of Babalu, as those people are out of control - especially the incredibly vulgar Henry Louis Gomez, who calls anyone who disagrees with him names (even authentic rightist Cubans like me, who came here in 1961 on a boat - where was he born? liberal Philadelphia! por favor, chico).

He recently argued in a series of posts on the CubanAmericanPundits blog that the only authentic blogs for the CubAm community are Pundits and Babalu, and that others - including RCAB! - are deviationist rags. He also likes to claim that by being in "advertising" he has a better sense of what CubAm and Americans want - since when is advertising associated with the truth? If anything, that's a career for liberals who spin lies.

I think the only people who read Babalu are American journalists looking for examples of reactionary, ill-informed CubAm views so that they can make fun of them. It's sad.
Viva RCAB as the authentic and clear expression of our community!

You remind me of what Henry said recently on an Australian radio show: that his fondest hope is to some day introduce commercial advertising to Cuba. The boy doesn't know that commercial advertising was invented in Cuba (as far as the Hispanic market is concerned).

Of course, you are not going to need advertising to make consumers out of Cubans after a half-century of deprivations.

Still, Henry will be preaching to the converted as he always has.

  22. Henry is a frustrated & closeted homosexual. He pimps the Cuban cause to release his anger at not being able to admit what he really is.

Val is still angry that he flunked the same university examination 6 times in a row. Which explains his alcoholism, and two-pack a day cigarette habit.

George is angry because he secretly thinks that he is not a real Cuban, because he is unable to speak the language. So he shouts and yells to prove that he is in fact more Cuban, then those Cuban who actually possess the Spanish tongue.

Point is, all have issues, which are independent of a serious and thoughtful discussion about Cuba, and her freedom. Rather, they have selfishly hijacked the Cuban cause, to satisfy their own personal insecurities.

What is a tradegy, is that some actually think that they are the voices of the Cuban-American community. Rather then thinking that they are in fact, the worst of what the Cuban-American community has to offer.

    ReplyDelete
  23. George can't speak the language and thinks he is AUTHENTIC? That's sad, bro. How can he speak for us if he can't even speak?

You should know already that Babalu was never about Cuba's freedom. On the contrary, Babulu was a vehicle whereby they could vent their frustrations, and deep-seated personal pain upon others. It is the only time and place that they can feel powerful, by inflicting their pain upon others.

If it were truly about Cuba's freedom, they would welcome differing voices, rather then repressing them.

Now, at others urging, Babulu has truly ceased to mention (anything) about Cuba. And has instead turned into nothing more then a ugly, racist right wing shrill domain.

  48. Socios,
We all agree in opposing Communist tyranny. The question is: given that a) Bush's policies toward Cuba have only brought more dissension and disagreement to the Cuban exile community, and b) Obama is likely to win (and oddly even Mas Canosa Jr seems to have endorsed him), what SPECIFIC policies should we demand of the Obama administration regarding Cuba?

I know some of you think that Obama has absolutely nothing to offer on this front, and that's fine; but if so, please state your positions succinctly and (if possible) without malice so others can see it clearly. After all, this isn't Babalu, boys!

I'd like to hear your thoughts, from both the right and left, on what we should seek. We need to restart a dialogue on in our cyber community so we can be clear and coherent in our demands to Washington, especially at this time when there is so much rancor among Cubans en el exilio.
