Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was a man who lived and wrote on his own terms, who told great truths that no one else dared to tell, who constructed the future by excavating the past: harsh, dogmatical and intransigent; fair, visionary and right.
POSTSCRIPT:
Why has President Dmitry Medvedev not declared a period of national mourning in Russia or decreed a state funeral for Solzhenitsyn? Indeed, why has this not been done by all the states of the former Soviet Union and former Eastern bloc? The end of Communism began when the truth about its crimes was finally told. To Solzhenitsyn belongs the credit for exposing that truth so completely and forcibly that it could no longer be denied. Without Solzhenitsyn Russia would still be ignorant of its real history and a hostage to the lies that kept its people enslaved and the world itself at its mercy for more than 70 years. The debt of the free world to Solzhenitsyn is also beyond reckoning. Here, too, he should be mourned for what he was -- one of mankind's greatest benefactors and a universal conscience of the world.
What a troubled life, speaking the truth could have cost him his life in his youth, yet he dared, one of a few, when men like that pass on it makes the world a little darker.
ReplyDeleteMay he rest in peace.
This man had the courage to show what was happening behind Stalin's brutal rule. Especially when many in this country thougth Stalin was the cat's meow. Sheesh, could we use more people like him today. May he rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteOne of the greatest Russian writers of all time. His courage, endurance and sacrifice during the years he spent in the Gulag are an inspiration for all those who have to live under Communist rule. He spent countless hours writing and rewriting his tale of the horrors of the Gulag camps under Stalin's rule. He is one of my favorite writers and the Soviet rulers feared him so much they finally decided to forcefully deport him from the Soviet Union rather than endure his criticisms. His sharp and mordant pen will be sorely missed. May God grant him a restful peace. He has earned his rightful place in Russian literature alongside Tolstoy and Dostoweiski.

Good question Manuel, perhaps Russia still thinks him a traitor for speaking up, to me they are still a bunch of commies, and what is this rumor I have been hearing of the Russians renewing their friendship with Cuba? wanting to send some kind of missiles there?

ReplyDeleteLMAO..it should be dimwits.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I said rumors is because I keep reading the Ruskies denying it and saying they are not sendeing weapons to Cuba, then I read they are, who do you believe?
ReplyDeleteHi Vana, long time without talking to you. I had being extremely busy since last winter.
ReplyDeleteI spend 26 years in Cuba before coming to the US were I had to deal with many Russians in various aspects. And then a couple of years later got a job doing designs for a small company owned by two Jews that were Russian immigrant, I worked there for almost eight years every day I was witness of their discussions, conflicts and stubbornness , obviously they were no communist. After all that I reach to the conclusion that the problem with the Russian people is not that they are communist but that they are RUSSIAN and that is something that can’t be erased.

"The comparison is false for two reasons: First, whatever you think of Obama, it would be impossible for him to transform his presidency into a dictatorship. The checks on that are too many to mention."

Look who is talking, this is the same rectal orifice that wished the Cuban people a hurricane to sweep the island and now he talks about karma! Your one brain cell must be working overtime.

ReplyDeleteFunny my friend, ah but you know his one brain cell shorted out a long time ago..lol..
Solzhenitsyn was right about so many things. It's interesting how he's been practically blacklisted ever since he delivered his address at Harvard umpteen years ago. There is a DVD which features interviews with AS available on Amazon- where he comes across as a warm and likeable human being- not the monster the US Anglo-Jewish media made him out to be. Don't miss that opportunity!
