I once thought the death of Babalú, though an inevitable consequence of its own self-destructive policies and the unrestrained egotism of its principals, was nonetheless to be regretted. I would have preferred its reformation to its decimation; but though I have worked mightily to expose its structural defects in order that the building might be repaired and saved, the Babalunians have responded only by gutting it till nothing remains but the fascade.
In the beginning, when Val did not have George and Henry to feed his megalomania, Babalú was not the blog that it is today. That is, it was not the fascist counterpart of its reputed nemesis. Its fascism is not ideological, of course, but consists of adapting the methods of totalitarianism for its own uses and purposes. As such it is on a continuum with Communism, Naziiism and all other coersive systems of control over the minds and actions of man. To this has been added, as Babalú's own peculiar contribution, the same kind of vulgarity that one finds in Communist Cuba's chancletera aristocracy.
Given the fact that it refuses to change but every day becomes more anti-democratic, given also the great discredit that it has brought on all Cuban exiles, and the greater harm that it has done to our cause, I believe the time has passed to talk of reforming it. The only solution is for Babalú to fall by its own weight. It appears that it is already close to collapse. It cannot come soon enough to suit us.
Mat said: also the great discredit that it has brought on all Cuban exiles, and the greater harm that it has done to our cause
ReplyDeleteThis is very true. I can personally testify that Babulu does indeed create enemies, where there was none before.
"To this has been added, as Babalú's own peculiar contribution, the same kind of vulgarity that one finds in Communist Cuba's chancletera aristocracy."
ReplyDeleteSo true. George's infamous "Fuck yous", Val's "el que mas mea" and Henry's "pissing in the wind" . . . what is it about bodily functions that turns these clowns on so much? But then, it always comes down to Val, Henry and George dragging the place to the gutter and making us all look bad.
What you say? We are democratic!

Facts that every Cuban-American blogger knows or should know!!
ReplyDelete1) That anti-spanish hostility is quickly increasing and spreading, largely driven by the conservatives that you vote for and with.
2) This escalating anti-Spanish sentiment, does not exempt Cuban-Americans.
3) There are Cuban-Americans within your community that make it easy for other Americans to confirm their anti-spanish beliefs.
4) Cubans like Val, Henry, George, could care less about negative perceptions of the Cuban exile community.
5) Why dont they care? Because they also "quietly" hate Cuban-Americans, and Cubans!!
Anonymous & 10:01 AM:
ReplyDeleteRunning out of ideas?
The Babalunians will run it into the ground rather than change their dictatorship, much as Castro has razed Cuba to the ground, so goes Babalunia, the same mindset, no freedom of expression, they will not allow dissent, thank God at least they cannot cater them to prison, if they could they would!

ReplyDeleteJohn,
ReplyDeleteCuban-americans are not scared of any anti-Spanish sentiment. That is not new to us. Despite it, we have been pretty darned successful in this country, even beating out white natives in key areas like education and other latinos in representation. We know that today's Americans don't really care about Cubans, so we are not going to be changing lots of minds by any buttlicking PR campaigns.
Also, the writing is on the wall, Spanish speakers and their children (although lamentably not of predominantly Cuban descent) will ascend to power in this country during the coming decades.
fulano de cal:
ReplyDeleteIn 25 years to be exact.
funalo,
ReplyDeleteFirst, i didnt ask you to be scared of the growing anti-spanish backlash. All i said, is that it exist, and Cubans are not exempt from it.
Second, before you take over America. You ought to consider first, how to take over Cuba from Fidel.
Unless of course, you have given up on the idea of taking over Cuba, as Val and Henry has long ago!!
mat,
ReplyDeleteTwenty-five years from now America will be a bankrupt super-power, controlled not by Cubans, but by leftist Mexicans!!
john:
ReplyDeleteThen, don't you wish right-wing Cubans controlled it?
P.S.:
ReplyDeleteIf I know you right, John, you will say that you would prefer the left-wing Mexicans.
fanlano said: We know that today's Americans don't really care about Cubans, so we are not going to be changing lots of minds by any buttlicking PR campaigns.
ReplyDeleteThere have been several points in American history that Americans did care. LBJ, Jimmy Carter, and Clinton. All failed in one fashion on another.
Unfortunately, "some" in the Cuban-American community taught the rest of America, that we "might" be better off if we did what the "some" Cuban exiles like to do. And that is just to "talk."
George Bush has been the greatest talker of all times. And he is the most beloved American in the history of the Cuban-American community!!
mat,
ReplyDeleteYou mean how the right-wing Cubans run Miami now. A Miami that is impossible to live in. The Miami that ranks as the rudest, traffic, quality of life, taxes, insurance, corruption. The same Miami that has collasped economically!!
Nah, there are plenty of American cities that are Mexican run that dont result in Miami's haves/have nots, that i would rather live in before Miami.

But, i will make you an offer. If you can cute and paste said hateful remarks by "me" within RCAB against the Cuban community. I will pledge to immediately vacate RCAB, never to be seen again.

ReplyDeleteIt never ceases to amaze me how thin-skinned "some" Cuban exiles are. I once saw Oprah Winfrey sit next to David Duke and conduct an hour long interview.
But yet, they want to toss John Longfellow out and deny him his constitutional rights to discuss Cuban-related matters.
Arent we all "real" Americans, cant we all discuss Cuban-related matters. Cant we all just get along?

ReplyDeleteBecause democracy prevails here and everybody gets his say. Babalú is practically a comment-by-invitation blog where only the editors enjoy the right to opine and their most abject commenters the privilege to praise their opinions.
mat said: We are big boys and can (and refute) John's criticisms when necessary.
ReplyDeleteI suspect the criticism that i express are the same criticisms expressed by Cuban-Americans at their dinner table.
Why am i denied my right to express my opinions at a Cuban dinner table? How come i cant say the same thing, that some Cubans do?
We are all Americans after all. Right? So i should be able to walk in the middle of downtown Little Havana, and shout to the top of my lungs any type of criticisms that i have about said community. Right?
Little Havana is not free-speech hating Cuba. Right?
From what I have seen of Joe in these blogs he's very sympathetic to our cause, Joe has a Cuban wife who has not been allowed to leave Cuba, that is all I know, he does not strike me as that kind of guy.

John,
ReplyDeleteWe have not been able to take over Cuba because of...guess who...the US! Good Cuban patriots are in US jails for planning to "take over Cuba." Your crocodile tears (like JFK's) do nothing for us. We have not given up on the idea of taking back Cuba, we just just keep getting backstabed (JFK, wet foot-dry foot, etc.).
Carter and Clinton cared?? Not about Cubans!

ReplyDeleteNo, Val the little Fidelist that he is has jammed Babulu hour.
ReplyDeleteWow, i am watching Chris Mathews "hardball" And he just showed the GOP's first racist ad against obama. Guess what, it contained the Willie Horton type "Spanish-speaking" criminals advertisement.
ReplyDeleteSad, but it will work, not only demonizing Obama, but every Spanish-speakers across America.
This is why i told you before, Obama will never be elected President.
This election will be all about the Spanish-speakers in America, and what to do about them, at least as defined by the Republican Party.

ReplyDeleteHe "screwed up" last week too; it was a rerun. Between cancelled shows and repeats they manage to do a new show once every 3 weeks now. Of course, what possible reason can there be to continue with this charade when the only listeners to the live show are Babalú's own editors? In the beginning, I actually used to review every show; but it soon became obvious that they were doing the same show over and over again. The only one who actually seemed to enjoy his voice on feedback was George. Val always sounded (when coherent) as if he had been put upon and Henry as if he were on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
LOL Manuel, Henry seems to screw up everything, sure hope he does not screw up his twins heads.
ReplyDeleteVal always sounded (when coherent) as if he had been put upon and Henry as if he were on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
ReplyDeleteVal always had 3 or 4 cold ones by the time he got on the air, Henry was too fat and obnoxious, and Al gore was just a clown, should had been shot by the Godfather himself, maybe Tony Soprano will do us the favor if he ever shows up again

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, exile makes everything worse. It is like living in a boat that never comes to port. I am sure that if your family had been allowed to remain united in Cuba it would never have become fractured in exile.
We sometimes forget that this great national tragedy is also a personal tragedy for each and every Cuban family.
Dear John,

ReplyDelete1) Cuban exiles "cheer wildy" with that stooge Bush shows up "talking."
2) Cuban exiles are probably the only group remaining in the entire world that cheers Bush.
3) LOL
2)
Mat,
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question yesterday. From what i "heard" i "think" i could live under a Cuban like that Raul Martinez from Hialeah.
When i lived in Sobe, he was the most respected Cuban politician in Florida. At least from the Europeans and American point of view.
I know a lot of Cuban-Americans say that he was nothing but a commie. But he seemed to us on the beach, that he was a Cuban that had both balls, and respect outside of the Cuban community.
One of those Cuban-Americans that didnt have a reputation of being a yellow-belly. At least on the beach!!
John:
ReplyDeleteRaúl Martinez is a very Cuban Cuban, despised as much or even more than the other Raúl by the likes of Henry Gómez, who find him an "embarrassment" because he is not sufficiently yankeefied to suit their tastes.
So, John, you would actually live in Hialeah with Val Prieto as your neighbor?
I think we would all love to see that.
MaT,
ReplyDeleteHialeah is a beautiful city. You oughta see what the local government has done with the place. Zoning? What's zoning?
Cuban-Americans don't have this blind allegiance to Bush, at least no more than the non-Cuban Americans from those "red" states with lots of Confederate flags who elected him in 2000 and 2004. If anyone still cheers Bush, it is them.
ReplyDeleteAnonimo: Cuban-Americans will not riot on Calle Ocho. In fact, it may be the most festive event since V-J day.
fulano de cal:
ReplyDeleteBush II has proved to be the greatest disappointment to Cuban exiles since Reagan. Much labia but no action. Still, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Not, of course, that Gore would have done any better by us.
I loved your blog. Thank you.
ReplyDelete
