Barack Obama Refuses to Denounce Rev. Wright

In his "Speech on Race" (which he now always calls his "Philadelphia Speech"), Barack Obama said that he would no more disown Rev. Jeremiah Wright than he would disown his 85-year-old white grandmother, and then proceeded to denounce his grandmother as a bigot comparable to Wright, which both diminishes Wright's bigotry by a mile and elevates his grandmother's exponentially. After all, his poor grandmother's only "sin" is that she is afraid of black youths who follow her from the supermarket. I think if white youths were following her home she would probably be afraid too. But no matter, grandma can sleep save tonight. The grandson that she raised when his parents abandoned him did not disown her yesterday. Nor did Obama disown Reverend Wright.

Once again, Barack Obama has denounced Wright's comments, but not the man. In fact, he makes this distinction clear himself: "I've already denounced [Wright's] comments that had appeared in previous sermons." Denounced the comments, that is, not the sermons, much less the reverend. In fact, when Obama delivered his Speech on Race, in Philadelphia, he admits that he "gave [Wright] the benefit of the doubt." So, as late as a month ago, Obama admits that he still "had doubts" that Wright's comments were "divisive and destructive." It is only now that Wright has challenged his own honesty and suggested that any criticisms which Obama has made of him were motivated solely by political expediency does Obama feel compelled to label Wrights comments as "destructive." "Destructive" to whom? Well, to Obama.

Even now, after Wright's most recent remarks, Obama feels the compulsion to praise him: "He's done enormous good in the church, he's built a wonderful congregation." That was at the start of his "denunciation." At the end he had this to say: "I continue to believe that Rev. Wright has been a leader of the South Side [of Chicago]. I think that the church he built is outstanding. I think he has preached in the past some wonderful sermons. He provided, you know, valuable contributions to my family."

Denunciation should be made of firmer stuff.

Obama is even willing to admit the possibility that Wright may have acted without malice in his "performance." Although he acknowledges that "there has been great damage," Obama stills believes that "it may have been unintentional on his part."

In other words, the man may be personally blameless. Still.

Then who's to blame?

The media (well, that's refreshing, at least).

Why?

Because they aired (or "triggered," as he puts it) "the initial round of sound bites" which were "a simplification of who [Wright] was, a caricature of who he was..." Well, it is true that a mere sound bite cannot convey the whole of Wright's perverse world view. But is that the same as "caricaturing" him. With his own words? Obviously, in Obama's opinion, Wright was a man done wrong by the media until the day when he actually questioned Obama's veracity. On that day, Obama says, Wright "caricatured himself." Still, though, Obama says that "made [him] angry, but also made [him] sad." Like a disappointed but still dutiful son, Obama blames Wright "for not showing enough concern for [him]." It is that anguish, more than anything else, that was on display in Obama's speech yesterday. How could Wright have done such a thing to him?

Obama claims not to have known about Wright's allegation that the U.S. government created AIDS to destroy the black community (gay men, too perhaps?) and other "divisive and destructive comments" which the reverend has made over the years. Obama has known Wright personally for 20 years and sat in the pew of his church for 15. He even used the title of one of Wright's sermons as the title for his own autobiography. Hard to think of a greater homage to one's mentor, pastor and surrogate father than to use the title of one of his sermons to define his own life and mission, though, now, Obama claims that Wright "does not speak for him." He obviously spoke to him and for him in the past when no one was challenging Wright's remarks or using them against him (Obama).

Obama has said that he will negotiate with Castro without prior conditions. That is, while he's in the room with Raúl they could be torturing a political prisoner in the adjoining room and it would make no difference to him at all. Of course, it would make no difference to you either.

Since you closed down SotP you have not been mentioned on RCAB. Indeed, the only time I have anything to do with you is when you visit here since I don't visit your blog. "Obsessions" should be made of firmer stuff.

Your man Obama claims that he sat in church for 15 years and never listened to Rev. Wrights's sermons, and, consequently, waited this long to denounce them as "divisive and destructive" and distance himself from him.

    Sure, that sounds plausible.

It is more likely that he never objected in 15 years to the content of Wright's sermons because he found nothing in them objectionable.

Obama has said that he will negotiate with Castro without prior conditions

you are lying MAT, you took him out of context. What he is saying is that in order to break the ice , the US must sit down to talk to the cubans at a higher level

I wasnt even going to bother to respond to this post. But since everyone is writing what i think. Here goes, i dont mind if Obama sits down and talks with Castro or Raul.

After 8 years of Bush's indifference, i think anything is better than Bush's inaction.

Of course, if the site of Air Force sitting on the tarmac in Havana will be riots in the streets of Miami. And yes, Miami Cubans will make fools of themselves on the world's stage "again." But it is not about you exiles anymore. You turned your back on your nation when you and your parents fled.

To be quite frank, Cuba's freedom is no longer none of your business. Particularly, if you have no interest of living there ever again!!

It is very simple. Free speech blogs thrive, moderated blogs die.

Dude, they totally understand this. That was my point, except, i used the analogy of racist republicans, which Mat seems to ignore.

And yes, if Obama were a Republican, Wright, would be right!!

  54. I am hoping that if Obama sits down to talk with Castro, he does not hear the screaming of Cubans exiles in Miami. Instead, I hope he hears the screams of the thousands of Cuban children who have drowned in the Florida straits, just like their parents did before they perished too, as well as the thousands of gunshots heard by patriots facing away from the paredon. Maybe this will add some perspective to the meeting.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Corgi,
I think the distinction is this:

The 3 wingnut preachers you mention are simply endorsements. Now, you are sophisticated enough to understand that McCain needs as much of the evangelical vote he can get. Sure, he's gonna take that and more, especially after what happened to him in So. Carolina in 2000. Bush threw him under the bus precisely by using these folks.

    BIG DIFFERENCE #1:

These guys are NOT his preachers, he did not sit and listed to the babble for 15 years.

    BIG DIFFERENCE #2:

McCain never had these wingnuts marry him; baptize his children; bless his home and pray with him before his announcement for candidacy. McCain hardly knows these kooks and this is clearly politics as usual.

By the way, MSNBC (hardly Fox News) this morning announced that Rev. Wright's posse yesterday was The Nation of Islam. If that doesn't show you who this guy is . . . and you really believe Obama never knew about Wright's beliefs and allegances? C'mon.

  75. john,
if I hung around with people that you disdain (the rightwing Cuban Americans) and sit with them once a week listening to their thoughts; have them bless my home; dedicate my book to them and call them my mentors . . . would ya vote for me?

    ReplyDelete
  76. ms.calabaza,

Ah, you again. Mat has made an endorsement, "any" republican will do. If Trancredo had won the Republican nomination, Mat would still be calling Obama the anti-Spanish bigot, rather than Trancredo.

    LOL

would ya vote for me? . . . even if I said everything you wanted to hear like: hope, change . . .peace, love and rock n' roll . . . don't think so.

  78. john,
well, I guess I can't speak for MaT but I think you are prejudging him.

My take on MaT is that he is against that immigration philosophy and you disagree.

Let's say we can agree to disagree.
Pretty cool that we are able to do that on this blog . . . don't ya think?

  79. Folks,

  80. ms. calabaza,

I already told you that i come from a republican family who tried their hardest to indoctrinate me with their racist beliefs. Instead of blacks, now their target are Spanish speakers.

If "they" ran for office, i could not vote for them. As i know their political republican affiliation is based "only" on hate. Rather than what is good for America. And what good for America is how i vote.

Therefore, if you were good for America, then yes i would vote for you, regardless of your politics.

Unfortunately, i have found too many Cuban-Americans also hate anything that is not extreme right wing.

  83. Esteban Colvert:

This I am sure will interest you. Martí wrote an essay entitled, "Would I Let My Daughter Marry a Black Man," which then as now was considered the litmus test for whether a white man was really free of racism or not. The essay was not published in his lifetime but was discovered 20 years ago.

What do you think Martí's answer was?

BTW, Wright just returned from a cruise. Without the tan his color is as white as that of any white man.

  106. vana, john, corgiguy, 2humid, agustin,KC/CB, various anonymi, babalu trollers, fantomas, alex:

Picture this: we don't hear from MaT for a day, then a week, then a few weeks and we keep coming by hoping that he'll pop up and tell us he's fine and just took a small vacation. But no, we still haven't heard from him. How can anyone of us reach him? We don't know where he lives, what he does, who he knows . . . the blog is still active and we all get together and start investigating. We would contact police to make a welfare check of a guy who lives in Union City, NJ. We don't know how old he is, what he looks like, does he have family? we don't know . . . but we won't give up because we care about MaT. So we continue to comment on Mat's last post comments. We search for clues, we argue, we blame one another for whatever has happened to him. Maybe Fantomas latest crazy comment made him go over the edge. Maybe some babalu boys found him and made him piccadillo, or maybe he's just debating with Alex at Miami and Beyond and that could take weeks. Maybe rick showed up and started slamming dear MaT and he could no longer take rick's sarcasm and something happened between them. Yes, maybe rick has the answer . . . we must contact rick . . . or could the babalu boys have hired a hitman ? How would we know that our sinsei, mentor is gone? Vana and Ms Calabaza (2 women with good sense)would fly to Union City and create the War Room , kc/cb can help us in the NJ/NY area to find Manuel. Fantomas we can drop in the bronx and let him scmooze with the common people and get any tips out in the community. John, we can send to the village to ask the progressives if they've seen a brilliant intellectual scholar who simply stopped blogging one day without warning.

The New York Post would have a headline of Intellectual Brilliant Blogger Missing, his groupies are lost without him.

Let's see, I can start on act 1 of this screenplay . . . vana, what do you think? You in?

    ReplyDelete
  107. You kidding Ms C, I would be in like Flynn, heaven help us, heaven help Mat, may nothing like that ever happen, I would go out of my mind, I need my Manuel fix everyday, he's like a drug, an intellectual drug, I would go into terrible withdrawls, I would be so sick with worry, I think we need to find out more about each other, thank God at least we have his real name, that picture is quite disturbing Ms C.

Tell me what is your astrological sign?

  111. "Recuerden he's got his daugther in the basement for 24 years and 7children to feed"

Fantomas cannot post a single comment without adding insults to it. Is the nature of the beast, so to speak. His mind ( or whatever is left of it after the Castro educational lobotomy), always works in warped mode and so his comments always reflect that state of mind.
Just reread his comments about MAT and there lies a good explanation of his filthy and warped mind (if we can call that disgusting mush within it, a mind)
He never misses an oportunity to add a sexual content to his comments, whether he is refering to one's mother or any other family member.
What a disgusting human being, devoid of all decency! A typical byproduct of the Revolution. No wonder he is a cheer leader for Obama, heck, he sounds just like the reverend Wright and just as disgusting.

Vana, thanks for your e-mail, now we can keep in touch when the absurd becomes absurder . . .

    Agustin,
I agree with you on Fantomas. MaT has been so nice to this guy and he just puts him down every chance he gets. He doesn't have the guts to do that at Babalu though, there he is SERIOUS!! I absolutely love your term "airborne fornification" too. Hope all is well down under . . .
