I've said it here several times already: Fred Thompson will endorse John McCain and he has today. This does not make me a soothsayer because it is only to be expected that a loyal Republican would endorse his party's candidate for president. It would have been news if he had declined to do so, but I doubt that any prominent Republicans will. This leaves only unreconstructed Southerners and toothless ideologues like George and Henry to oppose him with (or without) the party.
I would urge Henry and George not be crestfallen by this news but to embrace it as the lifeline which it is for them. There would be no chance that McCain would pick Thompson as his running-mate unless he endorsed him while his endorsement could still do him some good. So now Thompson is in the running for vice-president and his chances are much better of being on the national ticket than at any other time in the campaign. Thompson has proven that he is a good soldier and that's all that a vice-president needs to be. Although Thompson's characterization of balseros as "suitcase bombers" still irks me as does McCain's support for the "Wet Foot/Dry Foot" policy, I, unlike George and Henry, do not believe that I have been entrusted by divine warrant to pick the Republican ticket, and I could offer the ticket of McCain-Thompson my full support not for its merits alone but because of the great danger posed to the future of this country and Cuba by the Clintons and/or Obama.

MAT, did you have an epiphany? a while back you were getting down on fred for being a bigot something a about calling cuban balseros terrorits if i recall.
ReplyDeleteThe senator from Arizona has some skeletons on his closet. Let's start with him dumping his first wife for his rich trophy wife, The keating saving and loand scandal, ties to the mafia in arizona, on and on...
Politics makes strange bedfellows

ReplyDeleteThe Republicans are free to choose whomever they want for president, and McCain, who is obviously their choice, can, in turn, choose his vice-president. If he chooses Thompson, then that is his prerogative. John Nance Garner said "the vice-presidency is worth a bucket of warm spit" (actually he said "shit," but those were genteel times and the newspapers reported it as "spit"). McCain could do better than Thompson but he could also do much worse (Romney, Huckabee).
If the Keating Savings & Loan scandal is brought up so too will Whitewater. I don't think it is in the interest of either camp to delve too deeply into each other's closets. As for the "trophy wife," better one of those than a beard.
mat, the dems don't need to bring the skeletons out the media will. It's all over the net, newsweek has an article on it. google Ross Perot McCain, or Cindy McCain and her drug history.
ReplyDeleteMcCain biggest tap dance will be immigration, if he get's in bed with conservatives, he will loose the latino vote and you can't win the general elction without the brown folks you know, there goes the west.
Frankly if find it all the drama entertaining. But I'm surpised that you are warming up to Fred
Mat why so much noise abouit when you now the Democrats will take it
ReplyDeleteEven if Pee Wee Herman runs as Democrats he will win ...Even if LongJohnfellow is in the Democrat ticket he will win...
Vamos hombre

ReplyDeleteIf Obama's self-confessed marihuana and cocaine use or his having possibly been a hustler in high school hasn't derailed his candidacy, I doubt that any problems which McCain's wife may have had with cocaine prior to their marriage will be of any significance at all in this race.
However may "skeletons" may be in McCain's closet, they will never equal those crammed into the Clintons'.
McCain will get a larger share of the Hispanic vote than any other Republican would, but Hillary will still capture most of it. Let's not delude ourselves in that respect. However, if Obama is not on the ticket, the Democrats can kiss off the African-American vote.
Yes, it's going to be a very interesting race.
fantomas:
ReplyDeleteThe Democrats cannot win in November. They are stuck with a "dream ticket" that excludes WASP males. Before a woman or a minority becomes president of the United States, he/she will first have to run for vice-president in a ticket headed by a white male. Only when WASPs are comfortable with the idea of a woman or minority as second in line will they feel confident enough to vote for one as president.
mat, it's all about voter turnout
ReplyDelete14 million voters voters voted democrat 8 million gop on supertuesday.
americans voters had it with the bush and the gop, that's undisputable.
Number don't lie
If Obama's self-confessed marihuana and cocaine use or his having possibly been a hustler in high school hasn't derailed his candidacy,
corgiguy:
ReplyDeleteOn Super Tuesday the Republicans were not choosing between McCain and Hillary or McCain and Obama.
You can be sure that on Election Day you will have the biggest Republican turnout in history.
Neither Hillary nor Obama will motivate Democrats to vote for them as much as they will motivate Republicans to vote against them.
Fantomas:
ReplyDeleteI meant a hustler as in drug dealer. If he's really gay that could only increase his popularity among his fellow Democrats.
MAT, you are living in LALA land. It's all about voter turnout. Numbers don't lie!
ReplyDeleteLook at today's result. The hardcore republican base is 30% of the toal voter base. To win the election you got to attract the center. It's all about the independents, young voters, latinos those voters are going democrat in this election.
The republicans are divided, look at today's results. McCain is not exciting the base, today he is splitting the vote with Huck.
War in IRAQ, the ECONOMY, VANISHING MIDDLE CLASS, HEALTHCARE lots angst out there!
LA VERDAD NUNCA HA SIDO GUAPA!
Maybe Thomson is hoping to become VP, could be that is why he endorsed MCCain, Thompson the opportunistic? perhaps
ReplyDeleteI see Comdom head is cheering loudly for CHEBAMA with much affection.
ReplyDeleteGee, Why am I not surprised? .
